While Coltrane first gained attention for his revolutionary 'sheets of sound' technique, it was the deep spirituality of his music that really made his solo records such classics. Working in the bebop and hard bop idioms early in his career, Coltrane helped pioneer the use of modes in jazz and later was at the forefront of free jazz. As his career progressed, Coltrane and his music took on an increasingly spiritual dimension, and he remains one of the most significant tenor saxophonists in jazz history. Bags & Trane is an album credited to jazz musicians Milt Jackson and John Coltrane. Taking its title from Jackson and Coltrane's nicknames, it is the only collaborative record by the pair.
