Description

A WWII story so deranged it could only come from Quentin Tarantino! Mixing star turns from the likes of Brad Pitt with sweeping vistas and hyperkinetic, cartoonish violence, Inglourious Basterds is a loving ode to spaghetti westerns and trashy movies of yesteryear from a master filmmaker.

Inglourious Basterds begins in German-occupied France, where Shoshanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent) witnesses the execution of her family at the hand of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). Shosanna narrowly escapes and flees to Paris, where she forges a new identity as the owner and operator of a cinema.

Elsewhere in Europe, Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) organizes a group of Jewish soldiers to engage in targeted acts of retribution. Known to their enemy as "The Basterds," Raine's squad joins German actress and undercover agent Bridget Von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) on a mission to take down the leaders of The Third Reich. Fates converge under a cinema marquee, where Shosanna is poised to carry out a revenge plan of her own...

Winner of the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz.

Winner of the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz.

Here are four films that inspired Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds:

Inglorious Bastards: Tarantino's title is a take-off of the 1978 cult war film starring Scandinavian hard man Bo Svenson (Kill Bill 2).

The Dirty Dozen: This super-manly, Lee Marvin-starring military movie sees 12 US convicts sent to take down a group of German officers.

The Battle Of Algiers: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly composer Ennio Morricone's "Algiers, November 1954", from Gillo Pontecorvo's scintillating anti-war film, slots in perfectly.

Once Upon A Time In The West: Quentin's epic opening scene is a homage to Sergio Leone's classic western starring Henry Fonda.

Plot Synopsis

Quentin Tarantino's long-gestating, and much anticipated, World War II film is sure to delight fans of his artful touch with dialogue and visuals. Inspired by Enzo G. Castellari's Italian war epic, INGLORIOUS BASTARDS, Tarantino's film is a remake in name only and concerns the resistance against Nazi forces in occupied France. Brad Pitt leads a strong ensemble that includes Diane Kruger (TROY), Michael Fassbender (HUNGER) and filmmaker Eli Roth (director of HOSTEL).
