Oxford philosophy professor Stanley (Dirk Bogarde) had a stifling marriage and a lovely star pupil named Anna (Jacqueline Sassard) whom he quietly desired. After walking in on a clandestine tryst that his overbearing colleague Charley (Stanley Baker) was having-with Anna-his decision to help her conceal the truth from her boyfriend William (Michael York) would have shattering consequences.
