AMAZING GRACE... John Newton's Amazing Grace is the not only the best known Gospel song in the world, it also happens to be one the most recorded songs among entertainment's most notables, from Arlo to Elvis to Aretha Franklin and hundreds more. Judy Collin's a capella version from the 1970's charted high and is still considered one of her greatest recordings. For such a song as Amazing Grace, written back in the 1700's, to continue as one of history's most popular right up to the current times is nothing less than...well, amazing. This new version by Judy Hall is recorded in a relaxed mode with only a folk acoustic guitar backup by Jordan Lee. We've also included a guitar instrumental version of the same song by popular request. The sound & message is both simple and well up to date; it's the timeless message of salvation through faith in the risen Lord Jesus Christ. AMAZING GRACE (lyrics) Amazing Grace (How sweet the sound) That sav'd a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found, Was blind, but now I see. 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears reliev'd; How precious did that grace appear, The hour I first believ'd! Thro' many dangers, toils and snare, I have already come; 'Tis grace has brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home. The Lord has promised good to me. His word my hope secures; He will my shield and portion be, As long as life endures. Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail, And mortal life shall cease; I shall profess, within the vail, A life of joy and peace. The earth shall soon dissolve like snow, The sun forbear to shine; But God, who call'd me here below, Will be for ever mine. ____ ABOUT JOHN NEWTON John Newton wrote the words to one of the most beloved hymns of all time between 1760 and 1770, while working as an evangelical pastor. Son of the commander of a merchant ship, Newton was captain of a slave ship for many years, until he underwent a dramatic religious conversion while steering his vessel through a storm. Repenting and regretting the misery he had inflicted on the thousands of human cargo he had transported across the Middle Passage for many years, he devoted his life to the Church, and wrote the lyrics to many hymns which are still popular today. In 1780 Newton left Olney to become rector of St. Mary Woolnoth, St. Mary Woolchurch, in London. There he drew large congregations and influenced many, among them William Wilberforce. Newton continued to preach until the last year of life, although he was blind by that time. He died in London December 21, 1807. __ FACTS ABOUT AMAZING GRACE: *The First Known commercial recording of Amazing Grace was by the Wisdom Sisters in 1926 *Amazing Grace was included in the soldier's hymnals during the Civil War *There are at least 1000 documented arrangements and more than 1000 different recorded versions of Amazing Grace worldwide. *John Newton's original title of Amazing Grace was 'Faith's Review And Expectation' *'Amazing Grace has the power to transform a room into something different and better. It really is powerful' - Judy Collins *Amazing Grace was performed by Arlo Gunthrie at Woodstock *Amazing Grace was the most performed song at the memorial sevices following the 9/11 tragedy __ AMAZING GRACE CD JUDY HALL - vocals Jordan Lee - acoustic guitar (Martin) VERSES ONE & FOUR are the lyrics used in our arrangement of the song Amazing Grace on this album. It's a word rarely found in newer translations of the Bible. Unfortunately, it's out of fashion, even in Christian circles. Propitiation carries the idea of appeasement or satisfaction - in this case Christ's violent death satisfied the offended holiness and wrath of God against those for whom Christ died. Blood spilled to quench the wrath of an angry God? It almost makes the cross sound like a pagan sacrificial rite. Little wonder many Christians are uncomfortable with the idea of sinners in the hands of an angry God. But wait! In pagan religions, it is the worshiper not the god who is responsible to appease the wrath of the offended deity. But in reality, man is incapable of satisfying God's justice apart from Christ, except by spending eternity in hell. In Christianity, it is God, not the worshiper, who took the responsibility of satisfying his own wrath. Herein lies the amazing love of God - the Father's wrath was appeased through the willing sacrifice offered by his own Son. "It was the Lord's will to crush him and cause him to suffer... ...After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light of life and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities" (Isaiah 53:10-11). This is what makes the good news so great. "For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Thessalonians 5:9). God has no more anger left for us, only mercy, pardon, forgiveness, compassion and grace upon grace. * * * * * PRAYER AND THANKS: Lord Jesus, thank you for being the propitiation for my sins. I don't deserve that; I deserve God's wrath, but you've given me heaven. Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift! __ GOD'S GRACE BIBLE VERSE: 'May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through.' -- 1 Thessalonians 5:23 __ A MAN OF GOD A godly man is such a rarity today. So many start strong and true and quickly fall away. A godly man will take a stand, he can't be bought or sold. And to the plow he won't look back, though other hearts grow cold. He keeps the faith and keeps his conscience clean. He lives his life for Grace through all his years. The mark of a man of God is what he's faithful to, and what he's fleeing from, and what he's fighting for. The Heart of a man of God is what he daily pursues. His family, friends, the word, the church, and worship of the Lord. A godly man daily takes up the Cross of Christ and faithfully follows him as a living sacrifice... He's not ashamed of the gospel. His suffiency is Christ. And the Power of integrity of the passion of his life. Instead of reckless faith, he has proven his faith works, and the ulitimate priority is the Master's plan for the church. He's saved without a doubt, for his 1st love is the Lord. And the Gospel according to Jesus is the truth he would die for... He lives his life to teach the word in season in in not. For he fears more than any man, the approval of his God. he lovedly and firmly leads those placed within his care, and the power of his ministry is that he is a man of prayer... The mark of a man of God is what he's faithful to, and what he's fleeing from, and what he's fighting for. The Heart of a man of God is what he daily pursues. His family, friends, the word, the church, and worship of the Lord. A godly man daily takes up the Cross of Christ and faithfully follows him as a living sacrifice...' -Steve Camp- FAITH Dear J: Attached is your Daily Devotional Delivery for today: 'And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.' - Hebrews 11:6 How do we speak of our faith in God? What words would we choose to describe our faith in Him? 'I stand for Jesus!' many would say, or 'I am firmly committed to the Lord!' Faith, to some, is best described as an allegiance to Christ, a kind of siding with Him and His cause. This, they feel, is faith. I don't think so. Faith has little to do with commitment, or allegiance. When we place our faith in Christ, we are not so much taking a stand for Him as we are acknowledging the stand He takes for us. Faith is self-despairing trust in the Lord. It is coming to Him in empty-handed poverty. Faith is surrendering all, even our sense of duty, allegiance, or commitment. People of great faith are not measured by their shining commitment, but by the humbling degree to which they recognize how poor, absolutely dirty poor, they are in spirit. Their faith has power because they realize no good thing dwells within them. They bring to the Lord nothing but their open hands, ready to humbly receive whatever God in His mercy will give. Faith means being sure of Christ's commitment to you, rather than you commitment to Him. Faith is having confidence in His love for you rather than your love for Him. So if you want to place your faith in Christ, surrender all, everything to Him. This is faith that pleases God. * * * * * PRAYER: Dear Author and Perfecter of my faith, I come to You today empty-handed with open palms. I praise You for being the Source and the Wellspring of my faith. Please let me be strong... only in you _______________________________________________________ Hard Sayings of Jesus 'On hearing it, many of his disciples said, 'This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?' Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, 'Does this offend you?'' - John 6:60-61 Gentle Jesus, meek and mild, never harming, always charming. Is that so? Perhaps it's the picture occasionally painted in a child's Sunday school lesson, but it's not the historic Christ. Jesus threw so many hard teachings at the disciples, it's little wonder they got miffed. The Lord announced: Reality is wrapped up in me. Truth can only be found in me. If you try to save your life, it'll slip through your fingers. If you give it away, you'll find it. I'll deny you before the Father if you turn back. If anything is keeping you from me, whatever it is, throw it away. If it's your eye, pull it out. Your hand, cut it off. Your sins, all of them are wiped out - I can do that! I am rebirth. I am life. Eat me. Drink me. And finally, do not be afraid for I have overcome the whole universe! Jesus came not to bring peace, but a sword. The razor-sharp sword of His Word that divides your soul and spirit, that says, 'Does this offend you?' He encroaches, invades, and infringes on your comfort zones. He tears aside the curtains of your conscience and throws open the locked doors of your bad habits. He will brashly call your sin - sin - and He challenges you to leave it behind. Praise God for the hard sayings of Jesus. He's not uncaring of unfeeling about your life. He's not uninvolved. God has a way of offending - and thank His holy Name that He does. Thank You, Lord, for caring enough to offend me. Don't let me ever get comfortable in my sin. Press me up against Your hard teachings until I see the offense as... a blessing. _______________ Thanks for stopping by!
