Product Notes

B-SIDE BAND. Tauranga. New Zealand. June 2009. B-SIDE BAND play their brand of roots music: rockabilly plus rhythm & blues with a dash of country and jazz swing. Their repertoire comes from the 20th century through to the present. They play originals too. They are: Paul Parkhouse: vocals/harmonicas/saxophone. Simon Elton: vocals/acoustic & electric guitars. Carl Winter: rockabilly drum kit & percussion. In 2007 they played the Rotorua Summer Wine & Food Festival, Tauranga Easter Jazz Festival, and the Rotorua Winter Blues Festival. In 2008 they played the Mount Maunganui Summer Blues, Brews & BBQs Festival. The audience was over 10,000 revelers. They also played, for the second year in a row, the Tauranga Easter Jazz Festival. In 2009 they, again, played the Rotorua Summer BluesFeast Festival and the Tauranga Easter Jazz Festival, plus the Maketu Kaimoana Festival (March) & Rotorua Blues Week (June). 2010 saw them in Rotorua for the BluesFeast and a busy Easter weekend for the Tauranga Jazz Festival with performances on board the Jazz Ferry and the Jazz Steamtrain. Big response from the audience. June was the Winter Blues Festival, where they played their show to a full house at the Ambrosia Restaurant in downtown Rotorua. Their new CD 'Down Under & Blues' is expected to be released in August. Performance Comments. ----------------------- 'Bay of Plenty Weekend Sun' review of the band said: 'They specialize in songs you'd forgotten you remember... a mix of originals and re-interpreted covers... big sound... uptempo rockabilly and muscular blues, plus accomplished originals.' (3/9/07) 'Bay of Plenty Blues Bulletin' 2007 Tauranga Easter Jazz Festival review said: 'B-Side Band played out on the street and attracted a large crowd... they sold out all their CDs.' (April/May'07) A Canadian tourist at the 2008 Tauranga Easter Jazz Festival said: 'I've been to many Jazz & Blues Festivals on the North American West Coast. These guys would fit in perfectly. Have bought a CD already.' (3/22/08) An Australian tourist visiting Mount Maunganui, during Queen's Birthday Weekend, said: 'They sound like an alternative radio station. These guys would go great in Australia. Wild!!' (6/1/08) 'Bay of Plenty Blues Bulletin' 2009 Rotorua Summer BluesFeast Festival review said: 'B-Side Band presented their rockabilly style set, covering a range of classic blues and other material.' (February/March'09) A German tourist at the 2009 Tauranga Easter Jazz Festival 'New Orleans Village' site said: 'This band was so different to the young jazz students playing fusion and the old guard playing dixieland. Very refreshing! I'm taking a CD back home with me' (4/12/09) CD Reviews. ------------- 'Bay of Plenty Blues Club Bulletin' review said: '... cocktail of one part blues to two parts rockabilly... stylistic mix... originals and kiwi music... well produced album.' (CD Reviews. June/July 2008) 'Bay of Plenty Weekend Sun' newspaper review said: '... blues/rockabilly... kiwi music... 16 tracks... great guitar... evil sounding harmonica.' (CD Reviews. 5/16/2008) 'NZ Musician' magazine review said: '... sunny blues vibe... driving rockabilly drumkit... moaning harmonica... some great originals hold their own next to recognisable favourites... witty lyrics... this is a great disc of good-time rockabilly blues.' (Fresh Cut. August/September 2008) 'Bay of Plenty Weekend Sun' end of year review said: '... also with a garage feel is the rockabilly/blues of the B-Side Band - tough semi-acoustic lo-fi songs with local themes dominating their CD, PILOT BAY BLUES.' (Winston Watusi-'Best Local Music for 2008' 12/19/2008)
