MORE choice

Monday, February 20th, 2012

You might have noticed recently that some unexplained things have been happening on our various networks. There’s a lot of mention of ‘change’. As Garth from Wayne’s World said: “We fear change”.

But it’s worth noting that change, as we’ve been hinting through the past couple of weeks, is good. Most our favourite musicians, directors and all other entertainment heroes have demonstrated the importance of change. Times are a changin’, and specifically here.

You must be wondering what the heck we’re on about, and it is with great pleasure that we are here to announce something.

As is with the genius of regeneration with the Doctor Who TV series, we are also regenerating. But don’t worry, we’re not changing from Tom Baker to Peter Davidson. We’re more or less regenerating from Christopher Eccleston to David Tennant (or if you like, David Tennant to Matt Smith, depending on your tastes).

So what’s going to change?

We as a society demanded cassette tapes have higher quality, and so with the miracle of technology, we were offered compact discs.

Our movies were horrendous in VHS, so we wanted more. We got more with DVDs, more scenes, more endings, more bloopers and even more reasons to watch a whole series again for the commentary.

I can’t even begin to tell you how amazing the advancement of video games has become. The pixel count in an average FIFA soccer game would melt Steve Jobs and Bill Gates’ minds if they saw it ten years ago.

Well…we’re giving you more pixels than you can shake a Pixar film at.

As of today, ‘CD WOW!’ is now…

Think about it. Everything’s better in HD. More detail, more action, more suspense, more fun, more everything! No one wants second best, you want it in HD!

Watch this space. It’s gonna be more than you hoped for. Intensity. Choice. More of it. All of it.

MORE music, MORE film, MORE TV, MORE Games, MORE entertainment, MORE value, MORE interaction and MORE news!

It was a pleasure serving under you CD WOW!. Your service not only to me but to our amazing supporters around the world has brought us hope. Our allegiance is now with WOW HD.

Play as a pop star, party like a Perry

Katy supporting herself

The Sims. You must have heard of this video game series by now. It has been one of the most addictive games in the past decade where you spend your time making a fictitious character’s life so much better than yours.

I can’t count the amount of times I would be playing that game and say to myself “Oh, just half an hour more” when playing to suddenly see four hours had passed.

There have been three main Sims games, along with a plethora of expansion packs and side games to keep the series going. Just when I thought The Sims was starting to slow down, the creators decided to make another expansion pack.

In the game your character could get a job as one of many things, with careers choices ranging from culinary to criminal. The Sims: Ambitions expansion pack added firefighting, ghost hunting, and various other workplaces for your digital persona to work as.

Now you can add pop star to that list. And not just any pop star. Coming this march is the newest expansion, Sims: Showtime.

To get the series that lives off expansion packs, Mrs. (well I guess it’s Ms. now) Katy Perry has been thrown in the game for the special edition version, along with her hair types and other in-game additions.

It’s not the first celebrity-endorsed game. In fact, there’s a compilation video with the top 10 worst celebrity-endorsed video game.

Which person, whether it be celebrity or musician or artist that’ll never become mainstream, would you love to play a simulated version of?

Maybe you’ll want to avoid paparazzi by wagging your Nintendo Wii controller, or possibly using your XBox Kinect camera to work your magic on a photoshoot.

If the Kinect had the ability to take photos of you while looking like a fool, that would make for a great photo album. Our faces sure look strange when playing games.

Start 2012 in Skyrim, finish in 2013

Monday, January 2nd, 2012

Eep.

I’ve been sinking my teeth into the newest time-consumer and love, Skyrim, and it’s awesome. What was also awesome was their live-action trailer (see below).

Though I can say that it’s very similar in terms of gameplay as the previous titles Oblivion and Morrowind, that’s also why people buy Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty 3 -- they liked the previous ones.

I can safely say I spent over half an hour just deciding on what character I would create. The choices are such that you’d be tempted to play it more than once to see whether a hack-and-slash Nord would be better than a stealthy Khajiit.

The graphics are gorgeous. Using my Xbox 360 instead of my PC was actually my biggest concern before turning it on, as these kinds of expansive games tend to need a lot of horsepower to get it running. But it delivers. The lack of keyboard takes some time, but after a while becomes less of a worry.

What I’m worried about is spending just as many hours as I did with the previous game on everything but the main story, then never finishing the game.

I’ve got a lot of movies, music and shows to get through this year before the new seasons start, so I’m trying to catch up. Has there been a video game you’ve put so much time and effort into, and never finished?

Oh, Dragon Age 2…how I wish I could finish you.

Forget Doomsday, it’s New Years Eve!

Saturday, December 31st, 2011

Resolutions in the office, sans the snow.

THE WORLD IS GOING TO E……ahh, we’re kidding. The world isn’t going to end. If it does, from what 2012 has taught us, let’s all fly to Australia. Kangaroos can’t get hurt, right?

After much rejoicing from the new collection of entertainment I’ve accumulated over the holiday season, I’ve come back to breathe a little, and to send out thanks.

But it isn’t to those that have given me Christmas presents (they’ve already been thanked). It’s to thank you. Yeah, you. :)

Not to say my friends who have somehow bought me certain games and DVDs I’ve been wishing I’d get (quite visually on my social media), and somehow knew what I wanted aren’t to thank. But they are just a minute piece of the worldly support we have at CD WOW!.

Our gratitude for the continued support during the year can’t be expressed enough. There has been some amazing entertainment out there this year, and we’ve loved sharing moments (good and bad) with you all.

Sappy, I know. But it’s worth letting you all know that it’s your amazing support that has kept us music, video and gaming fans hard at work. I know not all our staff falls under the same categories for film genres and music choice, but that’s necessary. Who wants to only listen to what I like? I know one person, but that guy’s stubborn.

And with the kick-off of WOW’D this year, B’s been giving us another way to reach out to you to talk about the newest things coming out. She’s done an amazing job so far, as of course you’ll agree, and we’re looking forward to next year.

I do see a lot of great things ahead of us for 2012. As negative some things may come out of Doogs’ snout, it’s all from love of good entertainment. It’s our business to know what’s best to offer you. That’s why you’ll be able to order in items you’ve never seen on shelves.

No longer do we have to succumb to the woes of retail shop prices, because our store is online. If we feel like renovating, it doesn’t take a team of builders, but our IT team. If walls fall apart in our office, then I feel those builders will come in handy.

And this is where I thank you once again for supporting us through the year. We know our European and UK customers have faced a nervous financial situation, and our Australasian customers have been facing their own daily troubles, but what’s more comforting than sitting down with friends with your newly owned DVD box set, right?

Sorry, I’ve just watched Lord of the Rings trilogy on Blu-ray with friends. I don’t personally have a working Blu-ray (my PS3 is going through it’s monthly brain freeze), but a friend does, hence my pre-Christmas order came in quite handy.

From all of us here at CD WOW!, we wish you an amazing new year, and hope that none of your 2012 resolutions start with buying less TV show box sets. I think all that gym time’s getting in the way, in my opinion.

We’ll see you next year (tomorrow).

If you don’t have anything nice to say…

Ratner filming X-Men: The Last Stand.

It was a short, but sweet moment thinking Eddie Murphy would host the Oscars. When it seemed he may be coming out of the family movie format and fitting more into his Beverly Hills Cop-esque comedy, fans that were pushed into hiding were getting a taste of fresh air once more.

His latest film Tower Heist was directed by Brett Ratner, known best for Rush Hour and the third (and really bad) X-Men film. Brett, as it turns out, was also producing the Oscars, though he’s got into trouble for saying an anti-gay slur on the radio recently, leading him to pull out (no pun) of the Oscars. Eddie Murphy followed suit by leaving, either out of principle of the matter or being worried the Oscars may not be for him after all. Eight-time host Billy Crystal has jumped in to save the day, and hopefully the image of the Oscars, which got slammed this year for James Franco and Anne Hathaway’s performances.

But Ratner didn’t stop there. He had to go and actually upset Iron Man 2 and I Don’t Know How She Does It beauty Olivia Munn. In Munn’s autobiography, she mentions dating a Hollywood figure, and while never mentions a name, Ratner appeared on her old show ‘Attack of the Show’ to insinuate he ‘banged’ her, which turns out is *gasp* not true.

You may affect a TV show that hands out awards to high-paying actors, but you leave people with talent alone!

Ugh, maybe I’ll stop reading gossip this week and turn to my new love…Skyrim. I’ll keep you updated on the biggest and most epic RPG video game to date. I feel sorry for my upcoming lack of a social life.

Assassin’s Creed goes silver screen

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

Please be good. Please be good.

Video game adaptations into film have always been shaky in terms of what is hoped for, and what eventually comes out.

I mentioned this story a while back, but I was in northern France when Prince of Persia came out. Wanting to impress my friends, I suggested seeing the movie, not really knowing what any of the characters were saying. I knew the Prince of Persia games back to front, so chances are I could scrape away a few plot points and go for a ride.

And it worked! Jake Gyllenhaal ran around with his abdominals flexing this way and that, swinging a sword and being all…well he was French in this instance, but the main point was nothing was lost.

Squint hard to see Jake's abs.

Unfortunately I set the bar too high in terms of what I was expecting, which at this point I can’t really pinpoint as it was in French, but I could tell from the snickering going on in the audience the dialogue wasn’t that well-written (or dubbed, I gathered).

The medium of video games is such that to keep you entertained for 20-40 hours (not at a time, I hope) with jumping from tree to tree, or swinging your weapon at swarms of enemies. Imagining that for hours on end as a movie without interacting on a controller seems…well, dull.

Game developer and publishing house Ubisoft (who funny enough is French) has just secured a deal with Sony Pictures to make a film surrounding the world of the hugely popular game series Assassin’s Creed. While this is cause for celebration and fear, this particular deal’s caused a stir in the ‘biz.

Because Ubisoft’s roped in a whole heap of cash with the series, they’ve dared to ask for more control (‘Fighting the Man’-style). This apparently includes approval over the budget, cast, script and when it’ll be released.
Considering there are two major companies trying to suss out where each can benefit from such a film, it’s a shock to see the video game companies come out chest-thumping with alpha-male glee.

For those who have seen it, Ubisoft has already toyed with the idea of an Assassin’s Creed film. In the leadup to the second game, they filmed a live-action mini-series as a prequel of sorts to the upcoming game (ignore the cheesy voice in the beginning):

While better-looking then most other live-action videos, given a bigger budget and more control, it could be really cool. On the other hand, it could be another Super Mario Bros.

It was rumoured with Prince of Persia that both Disney and Ubisoft had issues with who had more control, both stating it was the other’s fault for the movie’s bad rating, though it still earned more than $300 million (made on $200 million).

If any of the videos made for the game can be taken into consideration, it could turn into something great. Click here for a look at the upcoming Assassin’s Creed: Revelations trailer, coming out next week (pre-order your copy here).

Christmas sales come early

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

My ears caught a snippet of music playing from the overhead speakers of a shopping centre: Christmas carols. I checked my watch to see the date, and it struck me: Christmas is two months away.

Nevermind that I haven’t even begun to think about presents for everyone, but the mere thought that Santa Claus is coming back to town already is just crazy.

Soon we’ll be looking back at 2011 and summing up the best in entertainment, but for some reason it just doesn’t feel like the end of October. I’ve been catching up on missed TV shows, spent countless hours on new video games, and even started reading books in large chunks at a time (a few chapters instead of a few pages).

And even now, I refuse to let go of the year. Why? Because it’s 2012 next year, and we all know what that means (haven’t you seen the movie?). That, or I’ve spent too much money buying DVDs and CDs for myself.

Lucky that we’ve had our Christmas Sale running at the moment. Until 30th October, we’ve got a whole bunch of awesome gift ideas from £2.99 up.

And if you miss out on our sale, then you’ve got our list of Christmas Gift Ideas.

We can find the right gift for each one of your family members, or my personal favourite, Christmas on a Budget.

Embracing creativity

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

Remember how you felt after watching Jurassic Park?

You may know his name very well, or have heard it for the first time, but Steve Jobs, the face of Apple and all its iProducts, passed away.

This is not going to be an eulogy of the man, but rather of what the man did very well: to inspire.

A lot of the time, we’re consumed with critique when it comes to innovation. When a world is offered everything nowadays, nothing can be the next big thing.

Steve Jobs loved to talk a lot about being ‘revolutionary’, and as much as it felt overused and a little too much for what he was talking about, it was that passion that got people so interested in every Apple product.

Thinking about creativity within any category brings up the ability to imagine, or to think outside of the boundaries. A lot of film and television directors have been given great acclaim for this, as well as scriptwriters.

It’s not often enough that we celebrate the act of being creative. You must have heard it a million times before at work by your boss demanding that whatever you’re doing, double that with a dash of ingenuity, which is unfair to say the least.

Remember the last time you truly went “Wow!”? Was it when you saw Avatar because of the amount of detail it had? Was it a twist in a story you never saw coming?

I remember watching Jurassic Park with such jaw-dropping awe that I instantly wanted to become a movie maker. The details of the dinosaurs, the amazing work of digital technology andsheer excitement of it all was amazing.

Far too often we are consumed with embarassment for acknowledging we could not forsee an event coming, and thus throw away any ingenuity as a simple shrug and a passing, when really we should be amazed by it.

We often watch television shows without wondering why we reach for that remote at the same time every week, or search for the link online.

Some movies inspire us in such a powerful way, that the bright lights of the outside world feels like a new beginning as the cinema doors shut behind you.

Video games encapsulate long periods of time with their stories, keeping our attention just as it starts to wane. Entertaining someone for 40 hours is no easy task.

We do love our entertainment here at CDWOW!, and we love to share that passion with you because at the end of the day, it’s more enjoyable to feel like someone else out there appreciates the same details in everyday enjoyments that sometimes are left out of the Oscars speech.

If you feel like giving a shout out to anything you’ve recently been absorbed in, whether it be an album that makes you close your eyes and daydream, or a simple line of a television show that kept you in stitches simply because they were able to reference something you hold dear to you.

I’ve watched and listened to some fantastic albums and seen some great flicks lately, and I will go in detail about them, because frankly we want to hear your thoughts.

Let us know what’s on your mind, and what’s recently inspired you. We’d love to know what we can do to make your entertainment needs better than you expected (a “wow” would be perfect, in fact).

The fountain of youth isn’t squeaky clean

Monday, September 5th, 2011

"I just want a little nibble..."

It may be that I’m trying to keep up to date with TV shows and am currently neck-deep (is that even a saying?) in True Blood, but there’s a little bit of news that has just caught my attention.

Stanford University, known for its upper-class persona and upper-lipped stiffness, has gone mythical. Not one to shy away from being pioneers of science breakthroughs, researchers have apparently found a way to slow the aging process in the brain (read the story here).

Though most of these experiments aren’t for human testing, hence the mice being used as test subjects, but apparently injecting an older mouse with young mice blood causes what is written as the “rejuvenation effect”, making more neurons, encouraging more activity across synapses, and less inflammation.

The opposite happens in reverse. While this sounds completely out of a film (which I bet the idea was originated from), I’m also shocked it hasn’t been tried before.

This is all too much considering the last week I’ve been spending playing Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and the concept ofaltering the human body. Not to mention that woman who injected horse blood into her several times. Could anyone be seeing this going all horribly wrong?

Kids! Don’t bite your older siblings!

Body and soldering

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

IT men never looked so good.

I’ve gotten my hands on the latest Deus Ex: Human Revolution, which deals with a not-too-distant future of human body augmentations.

The game itself is the amazing addition to the original game that was loved by so many back when it first came out on PCs in 2000.

These days the types of content created for marketing purposes to sell games, movies and such are becoming more inventive.

Whether it’s great commercials, giveaways, interactive internet games or even a funny video, it’s getting a lot of buzz around upcoming titles, and I for one am a nosy sort when it comes to this.

Looking forward to the game I now hold in my hand (well, was holding in my hand before I had to get back to work), I was watching trailers and trying to get a sense of what I was in for.

Here’s Deus Ex’s cool piece of marketing work with their documentary made surrounding real-life body augmentations, and where we’re heading at in the hopefully-not-as-grim future as the game has portrayed so far:

If you could have an augmentation, what would you get?
