Are you a Keytar Hero?

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

The key to the musical 'devo'lution.

It can’t be THAT hard to learn an instrument, right?

Well it can be, if you don’t have the confidence to make an utter fool of yourself. But technically without the bravery of standing on stage, you’ll never get to live out your rock ‘n’ roll dream.

When the first Guitar Hero came out into the mainstream market, people of all ages rushed to buy the mini-guitar and game to rock out to a list of great pieces of music. It brought a lot of smiles to a lot of people.

Wannabe musicians of today afraid of going out in the real world to learn their instrument of choice were using video games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band to teach important musical steps like rhythm, and the frustrations of hammering that last three frets to make that ‘solo’ sound really mad.

We’ve even had DJ Hero, incorporating the idea of mixing two tracks together to create a nice mash-up, which I’m sure got a lot of people rushing out to buy new decks and scratch the hell out of Rihanna.

While we do have Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock coming out soon, there’s also Rock Band 3. By now we’ve been swamped with plastic instruments in our living rooms for these games, but when playing the drums on ‘Expert’ difficulty meant you were essentially learning how to play drums, Rock Band 3 is introducing a mini-keyboard.

When a problem comes along, give it a head-butt.

The first prototype looks like a keytar, which can be strapped around your shoulder, or placed on your lap.

The first thing that popped into my mind was the potential of this being a great teaching tool for musicians out there wanting a gaming incentive added to music lessons.

The second thing that popped into my mind is the amount of real keytars that will be sold once it’s released.

Remember Devo? Whip It, with the red culinder hats, cracking whips, cowboys and safety reading glasses, was all about the keytar (although the woman in the blue dress and the bowl of cream never settled well).

How about Herbie Hancock? Rockit still gets me grinning with a cheesy smile.

Is it ready to come back though? Who knows, it could very well be getting piano players a chance to rock out to Bach again.

What do you think?

Xbox - A PC without upgrades

People out there owning an XBox, today is a sad day. I’m not talking about red rings of death, or a software update as dangerous as the PlayStation 3. I’m not even talking about the XBox 360.

I mean the heavier, older classic machine.

As of tomorrow, all original XBox games will not have online support. No new maps, no updates, and no multiplayer support.

That means if you’re adamant that the first and second Halo games are the best to play online, your pixelated teabagging days are over.

40,000 people logged on to Halo 2 to reminisce of the good ol’ days when putting countless hours into the game still meant something without the encouragement of ‘achievements’.

War affects everyone differently.

It’s strange when something like this happens. The old quote of not knowing what you have until it’s gone resonates loudly here.

Sure, you may not have picked up the clunky controller in a while, but once someone tells you that you will no longer be able to verbally abuse other players (or be verbally abused by an eleven-year-old), you start to feel a little loss.

Imagine you have bought a new laptop. It’s a very shiny laptop. It’s four times as fast as your old laptop. When you turn it on, it turns on immediately instead of having the time to eat breakfast and do your laundry before it boots.

Your old laptop collects dust over time. Then when someone finally responds to your newspaper ad to buy it, you suddenly have second thoughts.

What about that last-minute essay you typed up that gave you a passable grade, or the countless hours you spent on the couch chatting up BootyliciousChik24?

Boot it up again and play around with it for a while, but learn this important step. Sometimes in life, letting go is the first step into appreciating what you have now. Holding on to the past proves to be more clunky junk than pleasant memories.

"Back in my day we controlled games with our hands..."

Nevermind that the XBox 360 is in High Definition, because it’s the nostalgia experienced playing the game that doesn’t come with the upgraded graphics, better gameplay and larger online support.

But once Halo 2 becomes a “Hey, remember when…”, a faster and more advanced XBox will come out, and I’ll be reminiscing about Guitar Hero.

What should be taken from Microsoft’s decision to support the online community of XBox users is that with less people working on maintaining the old system, there is now a team joining the part of the new system.

Essentially, instead of guarding a Walkman, you’re guarding an iPad.

R.I.P. XBox Live V1. (2002-2010)

Now grow up and pwn at Halo 3.
