Leslie Nielsen, thanks for the good laughs.

He was a good man. A good...looking man.

No no no no noooooo. Not Leslie Nielsen. Not the Canadian who was once called Shirley.

Leslie Nielsen of ‘Naked Gun’ and ‘Airplane!’ fame passed away yesterday due to pneumonia complications. The comedian had such a way with words that if he read the weather, I’d still find some kind of comedy hidden within that would make me laugh.

A master of satire, a wiz at deadpan delivery, and the screen presence of a shiny goose egg. You know, the ones made out of solid gold that you just can’t look away from.

No one else could act parodies down-pat as he did. Mel Brooks was amazing, but Nielsen had a seriousness to it that didn’t make the movie over the top silly.

He’s been in TV shows such as Hawaii Five-O, Murder She Wrote, M*A*S*H, Columbo, The Golden Girls and Herman’s Head (no one remembers this show, but it’s the only show where the voice of Lisa Simpson is an actual actress).

He was 84, which is a good stretch of time to fill in 60 years in the entertainment industry. I had no idea he was in the air force beforehand though!

I want to pay tribute to Shirley-I mean Leslie. Here is my Top 5 Leslie Nielsen movies that I really, really hope you’ve seen before.

1. ‘Airplane!’ (AKA ‘Flying High’)
2. The ‘Police Squad!’ series that brought on the Naked Gun films
3. Dracula: Dead and Loving It
4. Spy Hard
5. Repossessed

What are your favourite quotes from his films?
