Product Notes

The Carl Rigoli Jazz Quintet, consisting of LA's top jazz studio musicians, has played together for over 15 years. It features: Carl Rigoli - Vibraphone David Angel - Sop/Alto Sax John Rodby - Piano Richard Maloof - Bass Mark Stevens - Drums 'Vibe Man' was the first recording the group made. The CD is a two-volume set with over two hours of original music. All of the musicians in the group are featured and their jazz improvisation is outstanding, creative and pleasant to the ear. All original compositions coupled with masterful performances make this CD the one to put at the top of your 'must check out' list. Vibraphonist, Carl Rigoli composed and arranged all of the music on the albums. He has appeared on many music motion picture soundtracks and has performed with LA's top studio jazz musicians. See what the critics have to say: Press KNRY Radio 1240 Johnny Adams Johnny Adams is a writer, Jazz radio personality, Teacher, and jazz consultant for such people as Clint Eastwood and many more!) 'In the last 20 years there has emerged a relatively small number of influential Jazz musicians, this despite the overall excellence displayed by those playing Jazz. Among vibraphonists during these years there have been five who have been of utmost importance: Cal Tjader, Milt Jackson, Lionel Hampton, Terry Gibbs, and Dave Pike. Listing these five does not deny the contributions made by such men as Victor Feldman, Red Norvo and Gary Burton, to name just three. There is now a sixth vibraphonist to add to this list: Carl Rigoli.' 'To say that Carl's work impressed me is an understatement. His playing is electrifying. Cascades of notes, Carl is well equipped technically, flowed into blocks of sounds. Carl not only understands the vibes and how it should be played, but as a teacher has been able to take it beyond it's capabilities.' 'Recordings such as this are valuable in that they demonstrate just how successfully and rapidly a new music is being synthesized from the innovations of the avant garde and the traditional jazz structures and procedures. The playing here is ordered and controlled by a recognizable and easily followed formal design which may vary from composition to composition (in contradistinction to the more or less highly formalized harmonic structures of post-hop). As these performances reveal, Carl Rigoli and his jazz quintet want freedom within discipline (is it meaningful any other way?) but do not want the music to be stifled or constricted by an over dependence, be they harmonic or metric. The ideal would appear to be total group interaction within clearly defined (and somewhat flexible), simple, but thematically challenging forms so that the players would never settle into the rut of merely playing on patterns. There is, however, much of the listener to marvel at in these fourteen performances.' 'It is a fascinating and illuminating experience simply to follow the remarkably sensitive, inventive interplay of the quintet, for it's commitment to real collective playing is fully successful as it is total. And listen especially to Rigoli.' Full Bio of Carl Rigoli: Carl Rigoli was born in New York City and raised in Astoria Queens. At the early age of three he became interested in music. At sixteen he began performing professionally and after attending the Manhattan School of Music he received a Bachelor of Music and Masters Degree in Music Education in 1965. Carl started performing with the vibes in 1964 at the Worlds Fair in New York City with many well-known studio musicians. This eventually led to working in nightclubs and in the studios. A year later he performed in such famous clubs as the Copacabana and the Latin Quarter both in New York. At the Waldorf Astoria he performed both with the vibes and percussion for such super stars as Frank Sinatra, Julie London, Johnny Mathis, Carol Lawrence, Tony Bennett and many others. In 1970 Carl moved to Los Angeles where he now makes his home with his wife. He has been very active as a teacher and also performing with Dave Angel's Big Jazz Band and his own Jazz Quintet. He has recorded five albums (CD's) featuring the vibraphone, worked in television and motion pictures, and continues to compose music. Portfolio includes: TV Show Soundtracks - Laverne and Shirley - Happy Days - Bosom Buddies (Tom Hanks) - Little House on the Prairie - Barneybe Jones - Best of the West - Major Dad Motion Picture Soundtracks - Little Mermaid - Sho Gun - Rocky II - Greece II - Star Trek Played for Top Entertainers - Frank Sinatra (Trilogy Album) - Johnny Mathis - Sonny and Shar - Jim Nabors - Shirley Mc Laine - Tony Bennett - Trini Lopez - Bob Hope - Jack Benny - Florence Henderson - Lisa Minelli - The Tonight Show - Tributes to Great African American Entertainers.
