Castillo was formed in early 2005, in Chicago, Illinois. Their lineup consists of Mark Sugar (vocals/guitar), Denis Chaykovsky (bass guitar), Sasha Horn (drums) and Ivan Cordova (guitar). The roots of the band can be traced back to late 2004 -- specifically December 9, coincidentally the day after the murder of Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell. On this day, in a small suburb of Chicago, Mark Sugar and Denis Chaykovsky met up and decided to start a new group. The two of them had been in bands together on and off for nearly 8 years (most notably local thrash band Animus), but had not played toegether in quite some time. However, the musical chemistry was instant, and several songs were written that same day. The songwriting was initially influenced by Bay Area thrash, hardcore, modern extreme music and vintage '90s angst. An ad was placed for a drummer. The person who answered it was Sasha Horn, a renowned metal drummer and veteran of the Chicago scene. (Among other claims to fame, he recorded an album with Chicago legends November's Doom). Sasha brought a heightened level of dynamics and technicality to the band's music. He also brought guitarist Ivan Cordova, a relative newcomer, to complete the lineup. His textural playing and unique tone (Ivan is left-handed but plays a right-handed guitar upside down) expanded the band's sound even more. 'Initiation' collects the first two Castillo EPs, '5 Songs' and '3 Songs,' on one CD.
