Product Notes

Catherine Berry's first full-length CD Geography serves up sophisticated musings on the state of relationships, the endless journey of someone addicted to 'clean slates,' and the sweet wisdom of redemption. Ms. Berry's distinctive, velvety vocals wrap around fresh, upbeat pop sounds infused with smooth jazz, Tin Pan Alley, and elegant arrangements. It's a sultry combination that delivers a sneaky album which warrants repeat listening. Ms. Berry says, 'The song collection chronicles the travels of someone who was continually searching without really knowing what to look for.' The title track 'Geography' is the carefree saga of a globe-trotting, career-minded modern woman. In between, Ms. Berry tosses off sexy ditties inspired by her own literary bent. With a surf punk riff and playful lyrics, 'Toothache' toasts Eve, the Original Bad Girl. 'Alice Wonder' revels in the state of being alone, not afraid to fly and not afraid to fall. Written to the rhythm of New York City's subway, 'Lookout' finds a working class mother offering an angel the night off. Catherine always knew she was stage-bound - either in the theatre or on a concert stage. Flaunting her musical roots at an early age, she played 'Blowin' in the Wind' around the Girl Scout campfire instead of 'Row, Row, Row Your Boat.' But it wasn't really Dylan that provided her earliest influences -- she grew up in a Houston household where the musical tastes ranged from Buck Owens to Broadway show tunes to the Beatles. In college, she discovered the beauty (and angst) of Joni Mitchell's Blue, later finding solace in the intelligent lyrics, and casual, cool delivery of Suzanne Vega. She was also drawn to the theatricality of David Bowie and the harmonies and songwriting skills of Crowded House. After graduating with a BFA in Musical Theatre from Webster Conservatory in St. Louis and joined the St. Louis Repertory Theatre where she earned her Actor's Equity card. Catherine worked professionally at Body Politic Theatre in Chicago and Off-Off Broadway in New York. Giggling, she says, she quit acting because music was 'a much more stable career. At least in music,' she says, 'You can rehearse when you want to; write when you want to; and sing songs you really want to sing.' Ms. Berry met acclaimed singer-songwriter Darden Smith during a songwriting workshop in Texas. After hearing a few of her tunes around yet another campfire, he offered to produce Geography and co-wrote four of the album's tracks. Since settling in Austin, Ms. Berry has also started a jazz quartet, written music for a play (The Metamorphosis/Blue Theatre), and has begun winning even more fans.
