Product Notes

Laying back on a purple velour couch, Chris Powers sits with his eyes closed listening to a playback of the track What It's All About. The engineer sits at the controls tweaking various knobs and faders as the intro settles into the groove of the verse. The sweeping melody floats above the surface supported by acoustic guitar as the bass and drums move the groove along. A drum loop interweaves through the rhythm section as an electric guitar plays a counter melody. The song receives a slight lift from the prechorus before taking off into the chorus: '...Send it off in a letter that I'll address to me. I write a lot better when time has a way of sorting out...' Powers sits unmoving as a smile flits across his face. And with good reason. Chris Powers just released his self-titled debut solo EP. The EP contains the three tracks, Wish Away, Fireflies, and What It's All About. It was recorded and mixed at Transporter Raum in New York City's East Village, co-produced by Gordon Raphael (producer of The Strokes' EP The Modern Age and debut LP Is This It?), Quentin Jennings and Chris Powers. The songs explore a range of emotions - from the optimism of Wish Away: 'If you never stopped to see the clouds how would you reach them? It's just a wish away...' to the fear in Fireflies: 'I told you; I warned you; you got too close - cold is the fire...' to self-analyzation of What It's About: 'Never thought like this before; never felt this insecure. It's been a ride on a rollercoaster...' Dedication to the craft of songwriting is an obsession for Powers. He's not content until the ambiance as well as every phrase, chord, note, beat are just right. He takes his cue from the great songwriters from rock's past: Lennon/McCartney, Townshend and Ray Davies, and proudly wears those influences on his sleeve. 'I do have to be careful sometimes,' jokes Powers, 'but at the same time, I have to stay true to what comes naturally to me. I can't force something to sound like the latest it record or anything. Trends come and go. But a great song is still a great song.' Growing up the family home was always filled with music. His sister was a singer/songwriter in the 70's and opened for Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen while both were still up and comers. His father was a highly regarded saxophonist from the big band era and most notably played with the Glenn Miller Band. While the huge generation gap (some fifty years apart) between father and son rendered them musically incompatible the influence was inescapable. 'My dad was a jazz guy but a big band jazz guy. And big band jazz was all about melody. Teaching me the importance of melody was critical in my musical growth. Of course at the time I thought he was crazy because he also claimed that Les Paul killed music.' Wish Away has been chosen for inclusion on the latest installment of Matchbox Recordings (UK) new music compilations - released October 30th; and preproduction has begun on a full-length record that will hopefully see the light of day in the spring of 2003.
