Why produkt with a \'K\'? Why care? Well the tale is a simple story of a nothingness that became something and of jokes that gave birth to grand ideas. So here it goes... here\'s the dish you probably wouldn\'t normally eat but you\'ve gotten this far so grab a fork! Back in 1983 in the Central California town of Visalia at a high school called Redwood friends met for lunch and complained of the complete lack of radio we could appreciate. What was then called \'New Wave\' music was hitting us from all sides with the notable exception of the airwaves. We quickly took it upon ourselves to \'create\' our own radio stations via blank tape. There was WUSS radio, KRAP radio.... and yes you guessed it KICK! I know, I know it\'s goofy but this truly is where it all began and thus the name KICK takes hold. We managed to turn our efforts into a lunchtime music stint called KRHS. With the exception of the 90 min tapes being passed around, KICK remained silent till JUNE 15, 1985 when DANSKICK had a debut at (don\'t laugh) Roller Towne. For the rest of the 80\'s KICK was a cassette taped entity that carried the logo: \'the unofficial number one unexisting radio station in the valley since 1983\' and, 175 volumes later, still claims to be so today. In 1990, KICK was headquartered in Bakersfield and starting playing at an all ages club called BAM BAM\'s, a local nightclub of John Bentley\'s, and this is where a young lad named Maht Jones first noticed Chrys Geringer (a/k/a the \'Kick\' guy). Maht eventually asked Chrys to co-host a radio show at Bakersfield College\'s KBCC. This was yet another happy accident as Maht actually attended Bakersfield High School and Chrys wasn\'t enrolled in the college either! In 1991, they created \'The Groovy & Nobody Show\' and played a mix of unsigned and local artists combined with popular alternative and \'fringe\' alternative artists. Within two months after the show began they joked about putting out a compilation disc and by September of 1991 \'CULTIVATION 91\' was their gift to the public. This disc became the top requested and played disc at KBCC and \'The Groovy & Nobody Show\' became the top rated show. I know, yada yada yada, it\'s only Bakersfield, but the groundwork had been laid. A KICK PRODUKT, as it was now becoming known, had CD\'s, shirts, it\'s own promotional giveaways from club owners, a Radio Show, and, believe it or not, we even had our own line of cookies from Sweet Surrender in Bakersfield. In 1992, the ball kept rolling and in September \'CULTIVATION 92\' was launched with one major difference. Cultivation 92 branched out from San Francisco to San Diego for it\'s artists and even turned down bands from as far away as Seattle. It remained heavy with Bakersfield and Valley talent but the product benefited and was rewarded with more listenership from all over California. Cultivation 92 remained the top CD at KBCC but, more notably, it spawned the 2nd most requested indie track at Live105 in San Francisco for the year. (\'Timeworks\' by Pale) Meanwhile, the still top-rated \'Groovy & Nobody Show\' ignited the trend of listeners taking control of the airwaves and spawned no less than 5 spin-off shows at KBCC and may even have inspired someone to create that Pirate Radio Station that we all loved that year. (also notable about Cultivation \'92 was the inclusion of the band Sex Art, who\'s singer, Jonathan Davis went on to form the band KORN) In 1993 Chrys moved from Bakersfield to Fresno and with that move left the music industry. In 1995, \'CULTIVATION NO.3\' was released with permission by a Bakersfield group known as BPAC Records. In 1998, A KICK PRODUKT returned with \'CULTIVATION VOL.4\' in September and for the first began co-producing with individual artists. The first of these releases was OCTAVIUS with \'THE DESCENT & DISSENTION EP\' that was co-produced with the ETERNAL FLUX label. 1999 marks a new direction for A KICK PRODUKT as \'CULTIVATION VOL.5\' is produced in conjunction with NEW ROCK 104. Cultivation Vol.5 was released in June 1999 with 73 minutes of music from 20 valley artists. Well that should be enough history for anyone so you can fold your napkin and grab a toothpick and prepare to surf some more! J. Chrys Geringer.
