When I Am Old & Gray
Dave Hansen is a singer-songwriter, who writes songs because he must. It is a fundamental and necessary part of his being, like the need to breathe and eat. His passion for music began at age 6 when he took up playing the piano. While he was still in elementary school, he started composing his own songs. He has a broad musical background, absorbing sponge-like every style from the classical compositions of Beethoven to the classic American songs of the 50\'s, the music of the 60\'s British invasion, and the wonderful songs that poured forth in the 70\'s from the likes of Elton John, Billy Joel, and the Eagles. In 1987, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee with his beloved wife, Christina, and their four children -- Nathan, Ashley, Jenny, and Emily -- to begin the best \'day job\' a songwriter ever had as a cardiologist on the faculty at Vanderbilt University, where he has enjoyed a successful career as a physician, teacher, and research scientist. Shortly after he arrived in Nashville, he got caught up in the thriving songwriting scene of \'Music City USA\' that is the sustaining force behind contemporary American country music. The songs from \'When I Am Old And Gray\' were written by Hansen with contributions from songwriting buddies, Don King, Hannah McNeil, Rob Higgins, and Charles Henslee. All the instrumental and vocal tracks were performed by Hansen with one purpose in mind -- to give birth to the songs as he envisioned them. In \'Thank God For Coolers\', the story of a leisurely day of fishing on the lake is told with light-hearted humor reminiscent of Brad Paisley. Hansen teamed up with Hannah McNeil and Rob Higgins to write \'I Gotta Leave You For Me\', which celebrates a woman\'s courageous resolve after she is pushed beyond limits by an abusive husband. His tribute to hard-working, dues-paying, piano-playing musicians, entitled \'(I Play The Piano) For Tips And Beer\', is one of the project\'s highlights and is guaranteed to have you singing along. He paired up with his old buddy, Don King, to pen the autobiographical \'The Boy Inside Of Me\' when these steadfast friends faced the trauma of turning older than they both care to admit. Lastly, in the title song, \'When I Am Old And Gray\', Hansen pairs an arrangement for a string quartet with a finger-picked acoustic guitar in a tender testimony about love that endures beyond any adversity.
