Dave Marsland is a masterful guitarist and soulful singer. But more than that, he's an arranger, composer, recording engineer, and all around nice person. Having started playing piano at the age of 3, he's had loads of experience in music. He's played just about every conceivable gig from classical to jazz, but is found on this album working with a 3-piece rhythm section to lay down tracks which then are layered with oodles of silken vocals and sumptuous keyboards. Recorded while he was building his home 24-track studio, Face Life is both a collection of autobiographical songs and an instrumental tour-de-force, packaged in a continuous 13-song segue in the style of classic 60's albums like Sgt. Pepper's and Dark Side of the Moon, with production values that make more than a nod towards bands like Steely Dan, Yes and ELP.
