Shroud of Blue
BBC radio: 'Local singer/song writer David Keen aptly describes his music as a ghost ship sinking and a mermaid reclaiming her lover. The title Shroud of Blue hints at the CDs bleak undertones and haunting melodies which remind me in parts of Nick Drake. Listen to 'Bitter Is Sweeter Than You'. It has twists of folk with it's violin and plucked acoustic guitar and merges tones of Donavan songs with more contemporary sounds. The tracks are full of different instruments all of which are presided over by David's commanding voice which is deep and rich. He does well at accenting lyrics and I particularly like the way he curls his tounge around the words on 'Bitter Is Sweeter Than You'. Perhaps it's just the violin in this song that makes me think he'd be at home on the stage at this years Cropredy festival. The last track 'Angel Of The Sea' is obviously his lament to the a fore mentioned mermaid. It is a relaxing piano piece which makes clever use of homesick alien style effects. ... a well produced CD from a talented song writer... a welcome new genre...'
