Harmonica & Guitar Duets
I've been playing harmonica and guitar since 1964. I've also done a lot of harmonica teaching. I first taught harmonica at the original Ash Grove, which was the focal point of the 1960s folk revival. I also taught harmonica at McCabes Guitar Shop, Boulevard Music, and at various colleges and universities, all in southern California. I studied blues harmonica with the legendary Sonny Terry and chromatic harmonica with the classical virtuoso, Cham-Ber Huang. Sonny Terry primarily taught me how to produce complex rhythms while Cham-Ber Huang mainly taught me how to get a throat vibrato. This CD, Harmonica & Guitar Duets, presents a wide range of music, including blues, bluegrass, ragtime, country, swing, Klezmer, and jazz. Unless otherwise noted, all the songs on the CD were recorded with a Hohner CX-12 chromatic harmonica and a vintage Gibson J-45 guitar. The recording was done with the Digidesign MBox and Pro Tools LE. I typically played a track of guitar, followed by a track of harmonica. This disk emphasizes the chromatic harmonica, partly because this is my main instrument, and partly because I feel this complex, beautiful sounding instrument isn't heard enough these days.
