Live at Kuumbwa
The nucleus of the Good Vibes Quintet goes back over forty years, when Dave Spears and Dick Fregulia began playing gigs and sessions together during their college years at Stanford University. Ken Plourde entered thy rhythm section in the 1960's and in the 1980's played a long stint with Dick as the Thursday night duo at Washington Square Bar and Grill in North Beach. Fritz Kasten came on the scene in the late 1960's as the drummer with many Fregulia groups. When the bottom fell out of the jazz combo economy in the mid 1970's, he went on to succes both as the drummer in the pop-rock group the Joy of Cooking and as a vice president of Wyndham Hill Records. Guitarist Brandon Robinson is the youngest member of the group, a graduate of the Sam Mateo College jazz program in the 1990's and a jamming friend of Dave's. The five members of the Good Vibes Quintet represent more than 200 accumulated years of jazz performance. The group originated in 1998 when they started rehearsing a book of obscure bebop tunes, quality standards, bossa novas, and originals by Dick. Since the year 2000 they have become a fixture in several San Francisco area cafes (Cafe Claude, Caffe Trieste, Caffe Divino) and restaurants (Washington Square Bar and Grill, Rancho Nicasio, and the Cliff House).Their Live at Kuumbwa album is played on Bay Area jazz station KCSM.
