Elgar: Symphony No. 1
(Jewel Case Packaging)
These live recordings from Jeffrey Tate and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra put the listener in the best seat in the house! The recorded sound is exceptional, with Melbourne's Hamer Hall clearly suiting the large symphonic resources deployed here. This is the first release in a series called "MSO Live," and first impressions would indicate that it will be a series to watch. Conductor Jeffrey Tate is no stranger to Australia, having conducted there on many occasions, most notably his acclaimed Wagner Ring cycle in 1998. Tate's approach to the Hebrides Overture allows the gorgeous themes to unfold, expand, and develop in a leisurely fashion. Elgar's Symphony No. 1 is a richly considered and spacious reading, with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra more than capable of expressing Elgar's virtuosic orchestration, changes of mood, and dynamic flow of ideas.
