With studio assistance from Dave Eberhardt and Josh Seurkamp, Russell's debut floats with a melancholic etherealness, punctuated by the vocalist's intuitive and visceral songwriting talents. Russell confesses to being a latecomer to musical performance, held back by some initial stage fright. But the music on Merge, while laid-back, exudes confidence and passion. Russell has a wonderful way with words and her lyrics are effective in their poetic insights. You come away from Merge thinking you know a little bit about Russell as a person. But, ultimately, it's Russell's voice that is most grabbing. Like Ani DiFranco without the overexcitability and histrionics, Russell's vocals have versatility and elasticity, but also an intimacy that befits her open, emotive lyrical approach. Elizabeth is currently residing in Nashville and recording a second CD. Stay tuned form more from this emerging artist!
