Emily Hanscamp Beyond Black & White
Emily Hanscamp is a passionate performer who enjoys expressing herself through music and writing songs. She loves people, nature, social causes and chai tea. Above all she gets a buzz from communicating through her art. And her chosen art is that of the singer-songwriter. But this young blonde twenty-something is not a clone of other wannabe popstars. She is very much her own person. Her lyrics are at times incredibly personal yet have a universal appeal. "they told her just the other day that poetry will get her nowhere suggest opportunity lies in chemistry think of your future she just wants to be free" On stage Emily Hanscamp exudes confidence. She has something to say and knows how to connect with her audience. Far from arrogant, she presents as an intelligent, thoughtful young woman who happens to play guitar and sing. Issues of identity, social justice and consumerism abound in her songs. But she is not a preacher; she provokes thought and encourages positive responses to global concerns. Songs penned by Emily Hanscamp are quirky but accessible. Her musical influences include Kate Miller-Heidke, Sixpence None The Richer, U2, Tori Amos, Indigo Girls and Dave Matthews Band. KT Tunstall, Bic Runga, Billie Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan also make her list of favourites. "The art of song-writing was an amazing discovery for me," says Emily. "From a young age, I've enjoyed writing and poetry and being able to make words come alive with music was exciting! Song-writing has been an incredible outlet for how I feel and helps to make sense of a lot of things." Emily Hanscamp has played gigs supporting artists such as Renee Geyer and Kate Miller-Heidke. Either solo or with her band, she has been on stage at Manchester Lane, The Rob Roy Hotel, The Noise Bar, The Cornish Arms and Ruby's Lounge. Her debut EP "beyond black and white" was released in October 2007.
