Product Notes

Fire on the Hill is a year-old Canberra band that has recorded one of the most interesting CDs from a local band for some time. It is barely folk music, but has a sensibility to melody and dynamics which sets it apart from most pop/rock bands. The song writing is clever and literate, with the same inventiveness and freshness of the revolver-era Beatles. This is an album that Triple J should be grabbing with glee. (CD review by Graham McDonald 'The Canberra Times' October '05) In 2004 local musicians Aaron Peacey, Lachlan Coventry, Dan Kempers and James Luke formed Fire on the Hill. They've spent their time gigging around ever since, developing a sound which is diverse, dynamic and at times, well, odd. It captures you, twists around in your head for a while and then floats away into a completely different sound. From twanging country to reggae rhythms, Fire on the Hill embrace a multitude of influences, drawing on Beatle-esque psychedelia, blues and folk. Track 7 Under a Cloud draws on the haunting melodies of Nick Cave, and the vocal clarity of Jeff Buckley - it's my pick of the CD as a song that really showcases the talent of the band. It's a professional sounding disc. Peacey and Coventry have distinctive, strong, soulful vocals, and the fluid melodies and bluegrass undertones break away to haunting discordant guitars or rhythms that roll through your body. They've made one essential flaw - opening with a country track. It doesn't give any indication as to how unusual Fire on the Hill's sound can be - and I worry that people who aren't strict country fans (or already well acquainted with the band) won't listen past the first song. "Endless Smiley Sunstar" is the kind of music you want to listen to on a late summer night when it's raining. It has an experimental, real, seductive feel - and if you close your eyes, it's almost like being at the Phoenix. (CD review by Emma Gibson 'City News' Canberra October '05)
