Five Foot Nine
Five Foot Nine brings together some of the Chicago scene's savviest players to drive home 10 decidedly hook-laden songs. Awash with guy/girl vocals, handclaps, horns, chiming guitars, cellos, and sterling production by former Webb Brother Neal Ostrovsky, the disc engages right from track one. Lyrically, the songwriting aims for the mercifully cliché-free. There's great variety too, from guitar-driven anthems to sleek female vocal numbers to Iron and Wine-style ballads. Overall, the buoyant compositions feel a little tiny bit like The New Pornographers meet The Shins, but more like no one you can totally put your finger on.
