Product Notes

Glenn Henrich started playing music 50 years ago, in New York. Professional work on vibes with his teacher\'s dance band followed 8 years later. Then keyboard and vibes in his own bands in NY and later, after a family move in 1970 to Adelaide, Australia. Glenn added clarinet, sax, recorder and finally flute to his instrumental arsenal, also playing pop organ and reeds in other peoples bands (folk and Rock), and in commercial recording sessions to help pay his way through a Bachelor of Music course. Although this study led to some casual work with pit orchestras and even ABC Symphony work, Glenn\'s first love has remained the creative buzz of Jazz and the magiclal moments of inspired improvisation. Moving with his wife from Adelaide to Sydney in 1982, Glenn joined forces with the new wave of young jazzers in Australia\'s biggest and arguably jazziest city. Performing on vibes, Fender Rhodes electric piano, and baritone or alto sax, Glenn was an important addition to seminal combos and big bands led by Tom Baker (trpt,/sax/trbn), another expatriot American, and young James Morrison (an Aussie who played mostly double bass with Tom and Glenn\'s quartet, but later with his own Big Bad Band and was to become internationally reknowned for his trumpet and trombone work with many overseas jazz luminarites, including two international tours with the Phillip Morris Superband led by Gene Harris). Glenn travelled around Australia and Asia and Europe with James Morrison and sometimes Don Burrows (Australia\'s most senior jazz legend) throughout the 80\'s, settling for work closer to his growing family and teaching commitments in the 90\'s. At this time Glenn also developed a musical relationship with Sydney guitarist, Jim Pennell (hear him on Glenn\'s CD,VIBES). Together with a succession of nearly jazzy \'cellists, and finally one really jazzy double bassist, Craig Scott (also on VIBES), they held down a residency at one of Sydney\'s major hotels for nine years, in the process developing a special rapport and some really hot swing and latin trio arrangements (Felicidade, Tenderly, Have You Met Miss Jones). The other trio artists on Glenn\'s CD are all Sydney friends, John Morrison, brother of James, and drummer extraordinaire (also the recording engineer/producer for VIBES), his wife Natalie a great bassist, also Steve Elphick who first impressed me during a sojourn he made over several years to Adelaide where his playing was in great demand, and Sydney\'s first-call Latin percussionist, Fabian Heviah (ex-Uruguay) Although I\'ve enjoyed playing ever since I started way back when, I have noticed that the more you do it, the better it gets! I suppose this applies to lots of things, but it may be the reason that, though I waited a long time to make a CD of my own, when we finally got around to it, it was exciting, challenging like any real jazz, but not too difficult to come up with \'the goods\' . I hope you\'ll agree that the goods are Good Vibes and all for sure. Now the challenge is hanging in to do some more! Reviews: \'THERE is something intrinsically summery about this: gin and tonic in a deck- chair, a gentle breeze and the sound of Glenn Henrich's vibraphone cooling and warming by turns. By keeping the per- sonnel to a series of duos and trios (with occasional overdubs of flute and baritone sax, which he also plays), Henrich has ensured the vibes have the airspace for the notes to live, breathe, and naturally decay. In busier surroundings all you hear is the attack sound, and the beauty is easily lost.\' \'The players include guitarist Jim Pennell, bassists Craig Scott, Steve Elphick, and Natalie Morrison, percussionist, Fabian Hevia and drummer John Morrison. The material spreads from Jobim to Horace Silver, from Henrich to John Lennon. Relax and enjoy.\' Jazz John Shand Sydney Morning Herald, The Guide, January 24-30, 2000 Glenn Henrich is a musician of rare maturity, a quality that is encapsulated herein with kindred spirits. This uniformly excellent album, by turns peppy and reflective, is well constructed, with just the right amount of surprises and nuances. The music is meant to charm - and it works - with a modicum of personnel - trios and one duo - with no lapses of taste. Lovely tones. Sparkling solos. Glenn is a spry, alert man and a musicologist. This collection deserves some market penetration. Mark well dear listener - remember, it costs the same as a bottle of Scotch and it will last forever! Len Barnard, Sydney 1999.
