The Gnomes have updated the formula from their debut, with a collection of folk-inflected rock songs which alternate with blasts of garage pop. 'Alright Okay' starts the disc on a quirky autobiographical note. The narrator of the ballad 'Dream' crawls into bed with his wife, joining her dream in progress. Elsewhere, bad behavior is chronicled (Ho-Chunk Casino, Getaround) and impartial political analysis if offered (Rodeo Clown). Misanthropy and sudden love get their treatment as well (Have It Your Way, Blown Away) This Chicago-based band offers an idiosyncratic take on classic rock formulae and deserves a listen by fans of Creedence, the Meat Puppets, and the Basement Tapes. Give it a go.
