Editors note: 'My Hope' is track 5 from 'Flying Without Wings' Born and raised in Wisconsin, I've had musical aspirations since a young age. I got my first guitar at age 7 and have been playing ever since. From garage bands to local bar bands, I've been able to have an outlet for my music. However, I recently came to realize that being in a cover band, although satisfying in it's own right, didn't allow me to fully express my musical vision. Flying Without Wings is my first full length release of songs, some that I have had swimming around in my head for about 15 years, while other songs on this collection are completely new creations written on the fly while recording this CD. I feel it is a statement of where I am creatively, musically, and spiritually at this moment in time. Flying Without Wings the album and the subsequent recording and distubution of the music represents an experiment on different levels. The first being the actual sounds that I had in my head- I just had to get them onto an audio format. I used Cakewalk software for all the recording, mixing, and mastering. I used various guitars and amps, picked up a used bass, and borrowed my sister's keyboard to record the songs. The drums sounds are produced from royalty free loops, arranged and sequenced by myself. I am very pleased with the results, the different textures of sound, and the emotion captured within the melodies. The second experiment is this process here, the distrubtion of the recorded work. I have felt for a few years now that the commercial recording industry giants have been dumbing down the music that it has been marketing. And I have a feeling that a lot of people feel the same way, from what I have read on various forums and websites. The comment I always seem to hear is 'Musicians aren't as talented as they use to be' or something along those lines. Now that can always be attributed to the generational gap line of thinking, but judging by the fact that the three most popular rock and roll stations here in the Milwaukee market are playing music created mostly in the 90's on back to the 60's, it would indicated something is wrong with the heavily marketed music of today. However, the notion that musicians today are any less talented is sheer nonesense. They just aren't getting the airplay. I have heard alot of local musicians who have just blown me away with their musicallity, ability, and songwriting. So my experiment is to see if an independent recording artist, such as myself, can garner any kind of underground support for their work, mostly thru the use of the internet. In other words, this is my attempt to 'stick it to the man'.
