The HOUSE POPES, hailing from invention's hometown, Akron, Ohio, are five seasoned musicians with a few too many initials after their names. The House Popes sprawl face down in a heap of folk and rock musical styles. Carol Hoffman of the Cleveland Plain Dealer said while 'the HOUSE POPES may not be the most popular band in Ohio, it might be the most 'degreed' band with three doctorates (two in history and one in psychology), [and an M.D.], as well as [several degrees] in progress.' With musical sensibilities inspired by REM, The Wallflowers, Bob Dylan, and Neil Young, and lyrical sensibilities from such socially charged artists as The Clash, Richard Thompson, and David Byrne, their songs are catchy, approachable, and keep you up and dancing. In addition to sharing their original material the HOUSE POPES perform an eclectic melange of musical covers recast in a musical style best described as 'edgy post-punk folky psychedelic Americana.' Their deconstructed covers include songs by the likes of The Clash, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Richard Thompson, Lucinda Williams, the Violent Femmes, Talking Heads, Beck and Leonard Cohen, as well as the ubiquitous Traditional Arrangement. The HOUSE POPES are happy to entertain completely acoustically and generate rave, but perhaps less raucous, audience approval. Founded in 1998, the HOUSE POPES have established a dedicated following of housewives, sales reps, bartenders, college students, bankers, wannabe rockers, folks we've never actually met, a dude named Greg who seems to think he knows us, and a curious collection of university scholars. (Many of our fans, like the musicians, come with advanced degrees, but there is a debate within the band as to whether this is actually a good thing.) In short, our fans come because our music touches them in some way ... or because it's a chance to get out of the house. Whatever their reasons, they come, they drink, and we love them. The HOUSE POPES wind their way among clubs, coffeehouses, and festivals throughout Northeast Ohio. Some of their favorite clubs include Akron's Lime Spider, The Voodoo Lounge, Annabell's, Northside, Cafe Momus, Coco's and Cleveland's Velvet Dog and the Symposium. The HOUSE POPES release their material through Domestic Pontifications Media, Ltd. Their discography includes the full length CD, Cleaning House, the EP, Potpourri, and Live at the Lime Spider.
