Product Notes

Artist: Impure Thoughts Title: "Lights Ahead" CD plus Quicktime Video "Drowning" CRR0601 i'm Vertrieb von Pool Musik Release: 17. März 2006 "These guys f***ing rock!" J. Mascis, Dinosaur Jr. Impure Thoughts new Album, "Lights Ahead", which will be released as the first album of the new Berlin music label Cannery Row Records, is a rich and varied collection of 14 original songs and features a video-clip of "Drowning". The members of the band, three from Glasgow and one from Paris, travelled and played extensively around Europe and America before settling in Berlin, where the cosmopolitan mix of people, dynamic artistic and musical scene, low rents and cheap beer combined to make a good creative environment. The band's first album, "Life and how to ignore it", unfortunately ran aground on the rocks of tumultuous line-up changes, and budgetary restrictions led to a recording quality that didn't do justice to the music on the CD. After regrouping in their current formation, which has developed into a tight and exciting live band with an intuitive feeling for each other's playing and an impressive repertoire of strong original songs, the band felt it was time to record a new album, making sure to avoid some of the pitfalls that befell the first record. They had worked previously with American producer and sound engineer Phil Freeborn, both on various studio projects and when he accompanied them on a tour of Lithuania, and they knew that he had the professional abilities, temperament and knowledge of Impure Thoughts' music to capture it on CD. The recordings were done over several months in 2005 in Phil's Claustrophobia Studio in Prenzlauer Berg, then, on the recommendation of Nikki Sudden, mastered in England by John Rivers, who, as well as Nikki's albums, has worked with the likes of Paul Weller and the Buzzcocks. Matt de Harp (Boss Hoss, two dollar bash, the Homebrew) guested on harmonica, and Boris Kontorowski (the Flashbacks, Comedian Pharmacists, the Homebrew) on piano and organ. Austrian film-maker, Nikki Schuster employed various ingenious techniques in her animated video-clip of the song "Drowning", which is included as a bonus track on the CD, and the package was completed with the artwork on the cover and booklet by South African graphic artist Andy Leuenberger, using images from Nikki's video. The songs on "Lights Ahead" draw on many years experience of travelling and playing music, with all the exhilaration, excitement, frustration and at times despair involved - all the ups and downs of a rock'n'roll lifestyle that is not merely imagined. It is difficult to choose particular songs to suggest for airplay or as a representative selection from the album, as all 14 songs would be in contention if it came to a choice of a single, but if a recommendation is required, the following songs provide a pretty good sample of the music on the CD: Track 2 -Take on the World, Track 5 - Lights Ahead, Track 9 - Drowning.
