Through My Eyes
Prelude: The image of a rapper has long been that of baggy pants, giant chains, rough and tough images, which all come from their respective origins but have now, become a cliché staple in Hip-Hop music. It is a rare vision to see an artist stray slightly away from the allure of bling-bling and the other commonalities of this genre. Jade Wing is the reverse mirror image of an iconic rapper. Though still keeping a good focus on some of these commonalities, Jade Wing has taken his charismatic personality and used it in a fashion to introduce a new style and voice to Hip-Hop music. The Biography: Every artist has his or her story. Most of those stories are very much alike. The artist starts from humble beginnings making music for fun and entertainment, or starts off as a prodigy, or works their way up to where they are at, or practices and practices till they get it right. Most artists consider their biography or story one lifetime or one story. Jade Wing is not like any other artist. For one thing, he doesn't exactly solidify himself to a genre. Jade Wing is a cross-genre rapper, adding in elements from all around such as rock, rap, soul, funk, jazz, etc.. Jade Wing's biography is divided in four different sagas, for lack of a better word! So without further delay........I bring to you......Jade Wing... Hidden Intentions: Saga 1 Born Otto Ramon Bohon Jr. Jade Wing had always known he had a knack for entertaining. Sophomore year in High School, Jade discovered a computer program that made it easy to mix-down a beat. Jade had always had an ear for music, but had no intention of building a career around it. At the time it was purely for entertainment sake! At this point Jade had not even written one line to any of his instrumentals he had created with his program. Instead he just made long musical instrumentals to listen to with his best friend Robert Small. A year passed and Jade began to deal with family issues as most young American teenagers do. Unfortunately, Jade had not found an outlet for his anger quite yet. Throughout his Junior year, Jade Wing ended up trying to discover who he really was. At this time, he did not even acquire the stage name 'Jade Wing'. A funny story about the name is how many people ask him what it means. If you would like to know, just ask him yourself! In this time of realization, Jade discovered that music helped him feel better about what was going on in his life at that moment. He was surrounded by so many negative energies that it was incredibly hard to stay positive. It made him feel weak, and he blamed many of his family's problems on himself. The angrier he got, the more music he listened to. It gave him a small sense of relief, but not enough to satisfy a void he was feeling. He tried many outlets including drawing, martial arts, and sports. They still could not keep him content. Jade's anger problem began to escalade daily, until he discovered another program that let him record lyrics on top of the instrumentals he was making. He did not hesitate to purchase the program and use it immediately. The first day he had it, he made thirteen new instrumentals. The next day, his 'Art of Writing' teach, Mr. Dumais, mentioned there would be something similar to an open mic night at the school and that they were in search of musical talent for the show. Thus Jade Wing was born. As soon as he got home he wrote for the very first time to a beat. He had written raps slightly before, but never to a full beat. He wrote the first hook he ever did. It was simple, and catchy, 'Mo Booty'. But the song's theme wouldn't get passed the schools censors. The way the first verse went was, 'Time to make love in the motherf***in' desert/ with this motherf***in d**k/ to give you mutherf***in pleasure...'. Not exactly school friendly. He couldn't think about what to write about, until he decided to write about nothing. His first whole song was called 'Unspoken Word', which he named his label after. The original version only featured himself and his best friend Rob Small. He performed at the show, and everything went great! Months passed and Jade had fallen into his first relationship. Now, he only wrote as an outlet, and he hadn't recorded more than one song. The relationship ended, and the void that was still inside Jade became even bigger. His anger rose and rose daily. He wanted to prove he was worth something. That he wasn't just a person amidst the masses. He wanted to do something people could be proud of. He decided to make his first album. In one week, he was halfway done, until a computer crash deleted all of his early work. Jade Wing was devastated, but he got an idea. He brought together four rappers and created the group Hidden Intent! The group consisted of Jade Wing, King D., Kash Karlo, and Rift the Prophet. The four of them recorded a fourteen track long album called 'Lyrics and Beats 101' . Jade Wing was the executive producer for the project. In their senior year, they all gave away and sold many copies of the album and made a name for themselves. On December 29th, 2001 Hidden Intent performed and headlined their own show at a local Tucson club called 'The Rock'. The show rocked, but shortly after High School, everyone decided to go their own separate ways. Thus is the story of Hidden Intent. Always a First with Patience: Saga 2 Jade Wing, now a freshman in college, found himself without his group. It didn't dawn on him to make a solo album until three members of Hidden Intent tried to put on a show without the other member. The show was a failure mostly because of technical difficulties with the venue forgetting to bring in a simple audio cable. Jade Wing considers himself a producer first and a rapper second. By this point Jade Wing had made hundreds of beats, and was about to finish his first solo album '1st Intention'. The only problem was that he still didn't have a unique sound. He tried to develop his own sound throughout '1st Intention'. Though creating a unique sound, the sound itself did not catch as much attention as had hoped to. Only releasing '1st Intention' to mainly family and friends, Jade ended up giving away many of the remaining copies of the album. Although he was happy with the final product, it still wasn't enough. Realizing halfway through production of '1st Intention' that his anger problem had all but vanished, he realized he needed to trigger inner emotions once again in order to make songs and music that people could relate with. His first fans believed he was good enough for the majors, so to speak, but Jade Wing knew it would take patience. 'Patience' became the name for Jade's second solo album. This time the raps were edgier and Jade Wing's lyrical ability took a stride alongside his production skills. The only thing holding him back was equipment. At this point Jade Wing found out how to create emotion in his music instead of waiting for an emotion to trigger it. 'Patience' was the darkness that '1st Intention' was missing. 'Patience' was the intenseness that Jade Wing was lacking from his style. In his own mind, 'Patience' became almost flawless, but his pride blinded him. 'Patience' took him to the 2004 Chicago RapVibe Summit. There he met with some of the music industry's top A and R Executives. With each one that he talked to, he received close to the same reply. He was close, but he was still one step away. They could tell he had heart, and the right attitude. They said the skill was evident, but it needed a touch of something... Many of the A and R gave him their phone numbers and addresses so that he may call them when he figured out what the next step was. They told him, to listen to Pac, listen to Biggie, listen to Kanye, listen to 50 Cent, etc.. So he did. Through Jade Eyes: Saga 3 Jade would always listen to music, and all kinds of music at that. But once he returned from the summit, Jade never listened to music the same way ever again. He dug ten times deeper into the meanings of the songs he listened to. He began to wonder what the artist was thinking, what could possibly be going on in their minds when they write their music? An immediate epiphany entered Jade's mind...Life. Music is about life. It is about what we experience on a personal level. Music is an explanation of life. But jade began to think on how he could explain life. He knew he wasn't an authority on the subject. After weeks of thinking and listening he figured out what he was missing. Life itself..... Jade decided to completely change his style. He developed a new persona in his music! Instead of writing about whatever came into his mind, he would write about what he could see through his eyes. So he recorded the first song for his new album, the song itself would eventually become the title track called, 'Through My Eyes'. For the first time on a song he had two extraordinarily gifted singers help him compile melodies and arrangements, which would set the bar for the rest of the songs to come. He would write about what he actually saw happening. And the best place to start after the title track at this time was politics! When starting this new project, the elections were underway. And what better subject to grab people's attention than the race. The song took no longer than 15 minutes to write and sequence. The production took about an hour or so to complete. It was the first time Jade felt that he had made a real complete song. He finally found who Jade Wing really was. Not a rapper, not a producer, but an artist. Music aside, business came along. In 2001, Jade Wing started is own label called Unspoken Word Records L.l.c. Jade then realized he did much more than produce the music. He designed his own artwork, his own web pages, and handled his own promotion. So he changed the name to Unspoken Word Records and Media L.l.c. As a subsidiary he added Jaded Beats as his production company so he can branch out and produce for other people. With the business plan in place, Jade is ready to finally take on the challenge of making an epic underground album! Now the next plan of attack was to feature new artists on his album. Returning with Jade once again was Kash Karlo now known as Audio to be featured once again on Jade's project. Black 1 also returned for new guest features. Through a production class at the U of A, Jade met another amazing singer named Matt Wong. A new great duo was formed! Matt Wong wanted to learn from Jade as Jade learned from Matt Wong in return. Nearing the end of the albums production, Jade met Rachel Immerman, Radio Star finalist. Jade had never heard a singer with such range before. Jade quickly agreed with Ms. Immerman to help her produce her demo, and to feature her on his album! But Rachel Immerman did not quite fit Rachel herself, as to why Jade renamed her as the Amazing Rachel Immerman! One more artist that Jade met before finishing the album was Geof Stemins, a genius at writing song hooks! With everyone in place, the album can't fail!!! The album is slated to release November 22nd... From Here on Out!: Saga 4 It's up to me...and it's up to you...
