Product Notes

FROM RECOIL MAGAZINE: Simply put, this instrumental jazz-funk-space-rock trio has put together a beautiful collection of music. The hyper-articulate guitar locks in perfectly with the granite rhythm section throughout all 10 tunes. Even when using elements from rock music, it never hits you over the head - though the guitar can get noticeably dirty from time to time. Refreshingly, no one style marks the whole disc and there is a deceptively full sound throughout, despite there only being three members (and few overdubs). There's a jazz fusion cover of 'Back In Black,' and several forays into cerebral math-type passages for the theory inclined. -- Ryan Cunningham FROM PROGRESSION MAGAZINE: This Michigan-based trio is razor sharp doling out a slick brand of jazz fusion. Guitarist Jim Carr's clean sound has just a touch of distortion in spots making every note stand out in his lean, articulate execution. Though he's front and center throughout, the very capable rhythm section has no problem tracking and supporting him in modes that are alternately rocking, funky and laidback. Many passages recall the spirit of the more jazz-oriented '70s fusion masters, especially the structures of "Sideira" and "On the Other Hand." A unique rendition of AC/DC's "Back in Black" is as breathtaking as it is humorous. They also cover Paul Simon's "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" in a smooth lounge style while teasing with rock elements. It may take a few spins to appreciate this crew's high-grade musicianship and the nearly math-rock level of intricacy applied on Gain. Jam-Lab doesn't bludgeon you with style over substance, instead opting for an organic, tasteful foray into fusion's many facets of fusion. - Warren Barker FROM DANGERDOG.COM: Overall, Jam-Lab's 'Gain' is a truly unique and pleasing work. I was captivated from beginning to end. Depth of talent and masterful composition meet to create some fundamental and original prog rock fusion. Highly recommended! - Craig Hartranft.
