Product Notes

'SMOOTH RIDE' The Jan Jungden Trio has a CD of primarily original songs in the jazz and R & B vein. Jan Jungden, founder of the group and writer of most of the songs, plays the piano, organ, flute, and even accordion, as well as sings lead and harmony on most of the songs. Her piano and organ styles stretch from modern to classic jazz, as well as include a smattering of her earlier R & B influences. She has developed her own style of flute playing, taking classical flute training as well studying the rock influence of Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) and using these sounds with her jazz and Latin flavors. Her original songs evoke the smooth sounds of Diana Krall, Sade, Astrid Gilberto, as well as the rockier edge of New Orlean's Meters, and Steely Dan. Always searching for unusual sounds, Jan plays alto flute on Besame Mucho, and "wah wah" accordion on Champagne Cadillac. Fred Fagan and Justin Blackburn together on bass and drums have created an expertly mixed palette of sound to make these diverse tunes each have there own unique identities. Fred plays upright as well as electric bass, depending on whether the song calls for classic jazz, or requires a more percussive and funkier sound. Justin Blackburn aptly created a different groove for each song, and added many percussion tracks including congas, bongos, vibra-slap, and claves. Special guests include Patty Tuite on vocals, a blues and jazz artist who heads her own band in Eastern CT, George Spurlock on electric bass and Bill Rood on saxophone. Mike Bloomer of "King Cake" played electric and acoustic guitar as well as engineered and helped produce this CD in his studio, the Upstairs Room in Scotland, CT. The first 4 songs on the CD reflect the trio's jazz abilities, and are a good example of most of the jazz club work they are currently doing. The second half of the CD reflects their R & B and New Orleans influences, interspersed with some Latin tunes, even a song written by Jan in Spanish! JAN JUNGDEN TRIO BIOS JAN JUNGDEN has been performing regionally for over 20 years. She developed her R&B roots with the eclectic "Jake and the Family Jewels" who toured the Northeast playing such clubs as the Bottom Line and Lonestar in New York City, Toad's Place in New Haven and clubs & concert venues from Boston to Washington D.C. She has played with Bobby Bennett and the Realms, the Convertibles, and the Patty Tuite Band, among other area favorites. With the Jan Jungden Trio, Jan covers keyboards, flute, vocals, and occasionally accordion. This versatile jazz trio plays classic jazz, Latin tunes, and New Orleans style rhythms as well as originals. The band has just completed a CD entitled "Smooth Ride" of primarily original material. In addition to performing with bands, Jan has played solo piano along the Connecticut shoreline. She works as a choir accompanist, and is musical director for local productions of Broadway shows. Jan's jazz influences include Diana Krall and Billie Holiday, as well as Herbie Hancock, Horace Silver, Bill Evans, and more. She has developed her own flute style by combining jazz with some of Ian Anderson's (Jethro Tull) techniques. Currently Jan resides in Storrs, CT . She has a B.S. of Education from UConn and studied jazz and classical music at the University of Bridgeport. FRED FAGAN began playing guitar at the age of twelve and was influenced by the rock and blues sounds of the late 60's and early 70's, to name a few: Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Santana, and John Mayall. Exposure to Kenny Burrell and Jimmy Smith opened his ears to the jazz styles. Fred started learning the bass in the mid 70's and has performed with 'Red, Hot and Blue', 'The Sidewinders', 'The Rhythm Kings' and "The Patty Tuite Band". He plays both upright and electric bass with the Jan Jungden Trio. His knowledge of the jazz repertoire as well as his ability to be comfortable whether he is walking through a jazz standard or taking a bass solo contributes greatly to the versatility of the trio. JUSTIN BLACKBURN has been playing drums since the age of twelve. As a student of Art Peretta, he was schooled in classical and jazz. With this foundation, Justin branched out into rock, funk, and blues. His biggest influences are Elvin Jones and Dave Garabaldi of Tower of Power. He has played with several bands including Knyte Flyte, The Black Burns, The Jan Jungden Trio and Shoe Suede Blues featuring Peter Tork, formerly of the Monkees. Justin completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in music from Eastern CT State College.
