Questions in the Night
Jay J was born in Tampa, FL and comes from a long line of musicians. Both of her grandparents were singers and musicians playing guitars, banjos, and ukuleles. Her father played the bass guitar and grew up on bluegrass music. However, Jay J played the drums just to be different. Her mother was an avid singer in the church choir while her father was not only a singer, but also the director. Jay J started listening and singing to music as a small child by the influence of her parents. Her father discovered her talent at a young age and encouraged her to perform in front of groups of people. She started out singing in the church choir and was also involved in school singing productions. She started taking singing very seriously and convinced her parents, at the age of 12, to let her take vocal lessons from a vocal coach at the high school. She took lessons for the next 6 years and was in the high school choir all 4 years. After high school, Jay J's father started his own entertainment company providing DJ and Karaoke services around metro Atlanta. He would use Jay J to open up shows to show people how easy it was to just get up and sing. He also used her to open up large corporate parties, sometimes in front of 2000 people. Jay J by no means was afraid to get up and do what she loved most. Her father thought it would be a great idea to make a CD of Jay J singing to some well known songs and take it up to Nashville, TN to see if he could make his daughter a singing sensation. After a week of knocking on doors and having doors slammed in his face, a couple of producers were interested in recording with Jay J. But at that time, Jay J had another calling in life. Helping people and making others feel good about themselves are some of Jay J's best qualities. She had always been interested in health care due to her grandmother and aunt being nurses. I guess you could say it was in her blood. She went to EMT school in 1993 and was quickly employed by a county service just north of Atlanta. She enjoyed working on the ambulance and helping others but felt she could do more. She decided to go to paramedic school in 1998. She also changed county services so she could be closer to home. Her career took off like lightning! She began getting major awards through the region and within the company she worked for. She was awarded several Stars of Life awards year after year for successfully resuscitating patients who were in cardiac arrest. She was recognized by her efforts and was awarded paramedic of the year for Cobb County in 2000. She was quickly made a field training officer so she could pass some of her skills and knowledge on to new paramedics coming into the company. Jay J's accomplishments did not stop there. She was just awarded the Cobb County Public Safety Award for her heroic efforts while off duty in the largest documented shooting incident in the city of Marietta which resulted in the capture of three individuals. Jay J and her partner risked their lives and helped save some of the victims at the scene and were able to identify the shooters vehicle to local police. Even with all these accomplishments, her singing was still lingering in the back of her mind. She never gave up on singing. She still performed for her father on occasion and enjoyed going to karaoke with her friends. But it was time to take that step forward and make her dream a reality. She made another updated CD of popular songs and began sending them out to record producers in and around Atlanta. She met with a few and then decided to go with a producer that was located in Alpharetta. The producer and studio was very well known so she knew she had made the right contact. After a year of co-writing and recording, the project was finished. Jay J is extremely determined and strong willed. She still works as a paramedic but spends most of her time marketing her work and writing new songs. She is currently playing in local clubs and is planning a small southern tour.
