Butten, Johnny & Newgrass Underground : Late in the Day
Since relocating to the USA, Johnny Butten has assembled some of the finest musicians available to produce a band full of energy, excellent musicianship and great vocals. This album puts a new twist on some old favorites as well as unveiling some original works. Guitar player Joe Smart excels on Johnnys tune 'Stowaway' with a blistering solo, but also shows his depth of emotion with some beautiful 'fills' in 'Late in the Day' (The album title track). Joe was the winner of the 2004 International Flatpicking Championships, Winfield Kansas and has continued to amaze audiences with his talent. Johnny himself also holds a multitude of awards both nationally (UK) and Internationally for his talents as a multi instrumentalist. Johnny has a solid grounding from working with Kenny Baker, Josh Graves, Peter Rowan and Bill Keith to name a few and that is very evident in the way he executes his banjo parts on this album. Each track has an individual feel, taking the listener on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. JB & NU are making big waves in the American bluegrass/Americana scene... If you haven't heard them yet, this album is a great introduction to the band. You won't be disappointed! But you will want to catch 'em live! Included on this album is a debut track from Hannah Butten. This 16 year old visited with her Dad and experienced her first time in a recording studio. Hannahs' rendition of 'Oh Atlanta' (track 8) carries the Alison Krauss influence but with a unique vocal quality all her own. 'She learned the song at 1:30am and recorded it at 10am the same morning'! A great song, beautifully sung by this pretty young girl from England. Enjoy!
