Product Notes

Kwanzaa is an African-American holiday which was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga. Based on African harvest festivals, it has become an important celebration observed both in the United States and around the world. There are seven principles, each of which is represented by it's own written symbol (not shown). There are also seven physical symbols of Kwanzaa: a mat on which the other symbols can rest, fruits and vegetables (the harvest), a unity cup (for all to drink), a seven-branched candleholder (the kinara), seven candles for the seven principles (one black, three green and three red), corn (an ear for each child in the family) and gifts from the parents to the children. The Swahili based names for the principles are: UMOJA - Unity (The Foundation Principle) KUJICHAGULIA - Self Determination UJIMA - Collective Work and Responsibility UJAMAA - Cooperative Economics NIA - Purpose KUUMBA - Creativity IMANI - Faith Each principle is celebrated on one of seven consecutive days beginning on December 26. The principle for the day is to be discussed by the family as a new candle is lit in the kinara. The songs on this CD are written and designed to offer insight into the meaning of Kwanzaa's seven principles while also serving as a testimonial to the significance of Kwanzaa as an African American celebration. This CD is for listening but it also serves as a companion to the separate sheet music booklet available through Celestial Melodies. Each song has three tracks, one complete rendition for listening, a piano track to aid in learning, and a full accompaniment track designed to assist in it's performance.
