Love & Fear
Many, many moons ago, I was 17 years old and sitting under a tree at the Mariposa Folk Festival on Toronto Island, Canada. Next to me was a young man who had a crush on me. He was an American draft dodger who taught banjo at the Toronto Folklore Centre. He was a gentle soul and homesick, though he never said so. At one point, I looked up and saw these two women approaching us from across an open field. One of them was carrying a guitar case. I was fairly preoccupied with my young man, so it was only when the two ladies were almost in front of us that I realized the one carrying the case was Joni Mitchell. She came up to us and said, 'Hi there. Would you mind watching my guitar for me for a few minutes while we go get something to eat over there?' Naturally we said we wouldn't mind at all. So there we sat, my young man and me, staring at this case. Neither of us made a move to open it, though I believe I might have run my hand along it's contours, as though hoping some of Joni's magic would rub off on me. She returned a little while later, took her guitar back and thanked us. After she left, we felt like something really special had happened to us...like maybe an angel had alighted on us for a few moments. We kissed, for the first and only time, and when I looked at his eyes I saw that there were tears in them. Funnily enough, there were tears in my eyes too. We never talked about that, but I always wondered about it. I think maybe he went back to the States or something after that. These are the sorts of stories I make into songs. I hope you like them. Xo Julia.
