Who's Foolin Who
Katie Cavera has made a name for herself on the West Coast playing Banjo, Rhythm Guitar, and New Orleans style String Bass. She also sings in the 20's pop style of Helen Kane and Ruth Etting. A few of her band credits include: The Bobby Gordon Sextet, Clint Baker's New Orleans Jazz Band, The Reynolds Brothers Rhythm Rascals, Jim Cullum's Jazz Band, Hal Smith's Rhythmakers,The Ray Skjelbred Quartet, and Leon Oakley's Friends Of Jazz. Originally from Southern Indiana, she attended Indiana University where she studied jazz composition and performance with David Baker. She currently resides in Los Angeles where she works as a full time musician and occasionally works on theatrical productions and short films. 'She loves what she does and she makes everyone feel good about playing music with her. She's a timekeeper with a heartbeat sound.' - Ray Skjelbred Hi - this is Katie. Well it's finally here! This is my first solo project. - Well, solo with some help from some really talented friends. Since moving to LA, I've done a fair amount of work on other people's projects. But for a long time I'd been thinking about doing something where I could call all the shots. I really didn't think it would be possible but then one day my friend Clint Baker mailed me a test recording he made with Monte Reyes. Basically he took a song I'd written and had Monte multi-track it so that he could play all the instruments. I was really impressed and asked Monte if we could record another song I'd written in the same way. A few months later Clint and I were back in the studio with Monte recording my Christmas song: 'You've Been A Naughty Boy.' Everything went so well and I had so much fun working with both of them that I asked if we could do an entire record this way. Fortunately for me they both agreed! If it weren't for Clint and Monte I would have never been able to do any of this. First of all Clint is one of the few people I know who is a real multi-instrumentalist. If you check out his webpage, you'll see that he not only gets gigs on just about every instrument he plays, but his extensive discography will tell you he's recorded on nearly all of them as well. This solved the huge problem of getting a full band in a studio to record for me. Clint should also be given credit for being a great spontaneous arranger - at times juggling three different horn lines in his head as we overdubbed. On this recording Clint plays Trumpet, Cornet, Clarinet, Tenor Sax, Trombone, Rhythm Guitar (track 4), Tuba, String Bass, Drums, and Washboard. It was great having Monte record us because being a traditional jazz musician himself (he plays his Tenor Banjo on track 6 with us), he knew what kind of sound I wanted. He did a wonderful job with blending all the overdubbed tracks which really completes the illusion. He could also set up his equipment and record us just about anywhere - although most of our sessions took place in a home studio on Nilda Avenue. Finally I was really lucky to get Robert Young to play solo piano on 'Irrational Pastime No. 1.' Robert thought it was funny which is exactly what I intended so he was able to play it with the right spirit. I had a lot of fun making this CD and I hope you enjoy listening to it!
