Product Notes

This album is the debut CD for Ken Elton, and represents material developed between the years 2001 and 2005. What is presented is the best of that material which took form over those 5 years starting from pieces of melodies laid down on 4-track cassette and later more fully developed and recorded in digital format. The two songs that have proven the most popular are also the most inspired of the collection. The song 'Amanda' is about a local Portland girl (of another name) who became an area legend through some very sad and unfortunate circumstances. It was not possible to have known her story and not feel that we let her down when she really needed us. So the song is a tribute to her. The other song that has gained relative popularity is entitled 'Like Vincent Van Gogh'. I liked this song a lot when I first wrote it, later became sick of it from all of it's flaws, and finally decided that it is the flaws that make it interesting. It's a song about devotion (of course) and probably represents my best lyrical work on the album. Interestingly enough, I've always thought the song 'Portland Street' is by far the best one on the CD, but apparently not many others would agree. It does have a religious reference which makes it problematic from a commercial standpoint - but I certainly have done more controversial subjects in my music than this one. However I must admit - some of those I left off the CD altogether. Many of my fans (I now have 5 of them counting my cat) have inquired about the source of inspiration for my lyrics. Of course I explain that my lyrics are as uninspired as they are uninspiring. However, I can make a few relevant comments. By category, the songs are best described as social commentary. I tend to concentrate on themes that express the harder side of life because it is there where I find the most interesting people. People who live in extreme environments express human behaviors with far greater clarity than those of us who float in the grayness of comfort. For this reason, I seldom write songs that are autobiographical. To do so would be as alien to me as it would be for a painter to paint nothing other than self portraits. However, I am sympathetic to many of the characters I write about, and I do express some of my own philosophies in the songs. So it is possible to gain an interpretation of the writer through the song - just don't take the words too literally. As for the music - you will have to listen for yourself. It is not possible to describe music with words - just as it is not possible to describe words with music. So listen for yourself, and I hope you find something you like. Ken Elton.
