Product Notes

On his second disc, Hannan continues to turn the ironies of desire over and over against a backdrop of gorgeous melodies, master-like accompaniment, and his characteristic background flourishes. Such is the case with the title track, a sprawling epic that works as a spectral warning of the dangers of dream-chasing ('tempted by the sea / so many just like me...just building a bridge to Atlantis', he sings.) His distinctive voice occupies every peak and valley as he moves on, aching in 'Far' for a long-gone first love who's newly married ('how was the wedding...did you think of me that day?') then hurling himself against a stony love interest in 'Madman' ('he cries not in your arms, but in a pile of coupons'.) Hannan gives his listeners plenty to get into here - from the propulsive 'Mrs. Magazine' to the sparse acoustic offering 'Riding Horses on the Moon'; the booming dance beat of 'Ice Vine' to the sweet, country-tinged closer, 'It'll Be Alright' Characteristically, Hannan has strewn plenty of riddles about the disc for those who enjoy the extra work (check out 'Chanting Tide') but leaves it strictly optional, wrapping them in melodies and harmonies you'll find yourself humming the next day.
