There's a lot of travel in these songs, a lot of moving on. Plenty of common byways - dirt paths, sidewalks, backroads, railroad tracks and highways - map the dozen hopeful departures here on Lambert Billy's debut CD. For all the restless motion, all the shifting ground underfoot, all the trucks and roadhouses and buses, the surprise is that these songs turn over no question as often or as difficult as that of what it takes to remain. Where must we go, down what private, twisting internal roads, to discover the means of holding steady on the lifelong paths we have chosen? By turns carefree and introspective, the narrators of these entertaining songs, given spirited voice through the intuitive lyrics of Lambert Billy, do their best to answer for themselves this rough question. Each in his or her way, the travelers here courageously strike out along those imagined and necessary roads we all traverse between home, everything that is not, and home again. -Scott Cole.
