Born in Ayrshire, Scotland, Laurence Gargan began playing cornet in the local colliery brass band. After studying trumpet at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama he was appointed as Sub-Principal Trumpet in the Orquestra Sinfonica de Sevilla, Spain in 1990. He has won various awards including the Medal of the Worshipful Company of Musicians, and an ESU Scholarship which enabled him to study in Aspen Colorado with Raymond Mase, an experience which helped his career and forged lasting friendships. He joined the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra as Assistant Principal Trumpet in 1993 moving up to Principal in 1996, also performing as a soloist with them in the concerti of Haydn, Hummel, Arutiunian, and Telemann. Gargan joined the Singapore Symphony Orchestra as Principal Trumpet in 2004. He has played as Guest Principal Trumpet with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra amongst others . Recently he performed as Guest Principal Trumpet with the BBC Scottish Symphony and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestras including performances at the 2008 Proms in London.
