What happens when you spend a year in the recording studio with a band hell bent on making a great record? Ask Seattle recording artists Leuko, that's exactly what they did in 2003. Holed up in a backyard studio with producer Colin Davis, they have managed to create a record that shines with spontaneity, production and a healthy shot of bombast. So, the country's at war, it's an election year and Britney Spears is getting married again; what makes this band so special? Let's start with Jesse Fox, Cheryl Hooper, and Kevin Walter, all founding members of the underrated northwest rock band Polecat. With their stunning debut release 40hz and sophomore effort High Pressure System, Polecat established themselves as a major Northwest institution through a combination of introspective lyrics, boundless musicianship with a raw, mesmerizing stage show. Their memorable 5 years as one of the Northwest's most prevalent underground rock bands includes a coveted slot on Van's Warped Tour '99, Endfest '99, and debuting #1 on Seattle's infamous KCMU college radio. Polecat also maintained steady rotation on 107.7 The End's local show, composed a track for Microsoft's Project Gotham Racer, and their second release, High Pressure System, was voted one of the top 10 records of 1999 by the Seattle Weekly. Leuko encompasses every hard-hitting aspect of the former Polecat, but now travel into uncharted sonic territory, due to an overabundance of studio time and two new members. Joining the group on keyboards is Seattle's prodigal son and Cornish graduate, Kelly Wyse. Did we mention Wade Neal of northwest rock juggernaut, Seaweed on guitar? Wade has played kick-ass guitar tracks has 5 successful releases with Seaweed; 3 on Subpop, 1 on Hollywood, and 1 on Merge Records as well as having toured with a myriad of successful artists. So what does Leuko sound like? Heavy, sweet, frantic and surprisingly vulnerable at times would be one of many ways to describe the sound. This group is a beautiful showcase of not only the group's musical prowess, but also Jesse's uncanny knack for writing and arranging a song. The dynamic compositions rise like the tide one minute and push you out the back of a jet at 40k feet the next. Leuko combines unmatched vocal style, explosive guitar playing, menacing bass and unbelievable drumming. You will find this self-titled release elevated to permanent status in your CD player. Together they form a perfect rock storm ready to devastate all ears in it's path. Regardless of the description, the music speaks for itself; making this record something music fans will want in their collection.
