Green & Gold
Vibrant. Fresh. Poetic. Soulful. Green and Gold. A celebration of music composed by Mark Armanini, a unique addition to Vancouver's thriving contemporary culture. Neither east or west, this is music created from the shared experience of composer and performer; a coming together of cultures, a music of classic elegance and virtuosity. Of the many new musical opportunities brought forth by the mix of cultures in the city, the excitement and wonder on hearing the yangqin (Chinese hammered dulcimer) and western harp together for the first time remains a magically transcendant moment. Immediately apparent was a heightened sense of duality; a mixture of cultures both ancient and contemporary, a sound that spoke with transparent supple ease and a natural balance of acoustic performed by two very special artists: Heidi Krutzen, harp and Vivian Xia, yangqin. The magically light and boundless musical colours on Green and Gold illustrate the freshness of this sound. The poetical sounds reach out further in the two trios: in Three Friends to include virtuosi Qiu Xia Her pipa, (Chinese plucked lute), and David Harding viola; and on Scented Flowers, Ji Rong Huang erhu,(Chimese bowed two string violin). Each of these performers, having been closely involved in the development of the works, brings to life a richly woven fabric of musical virtuosity that can only be the result of extensive collaboration, communication and consultation between composer and performer. Both far reaching in it's makeup and intimate in it's details,Green and Gold is a celebration of the old becoming the new, of the musical continuum renewing itself; a music moulded from a vibrant new culture.Green and Gold is the best of both worlds, a gift of beauty and a revelation of musical thought.
