Product Notes

The best way to get to know Marny Duncan-Cary is listen to her songs...because her life, her heart, her energy and her fun is in every single one of them. Influenced by Patsy Cline, Peggy Lee, Etta James and Hank Williams, Marny combines a naturally strong, melodic voice with a country, jazz and blues sound. The result is music ranging from down-to-earth and approachable to energetic and exciting. It's the kind of music that audiences applaud and that stays with you after hearing it...something you don't mind one bit. Marny recently won four awards at the 16th Annual 2005 Saskatchewan Country Music Awards (Canada). Her awards include Rising Star, Female Vocalist of the Year, Composer of the Year (for her song 'Because I Want To'), and Album of the Year for her debut album Reason For Bein'. Marny was a showcase artist at the 2003 Canadian Country Music Awards and was part of the prestigious Songwriter's Cafe at the 2004 CCMAs. 'Who's That Man', a song based on Marny's family history with WWII, was chosen to be part of CBC Radio Show, 'Round Up', for their Remembrance Day Special in 2004. This song, along with 'Linger', another song from Marny's award- winning album, made a brief appearance in the episode 'Security Cam' of the CTV hit comedy, Corner Gas. Wife, mother of three wonderful girls, Great Dane-owner, singer, songwriter, Harley-rider, straight-shooter, dedicated yoga-ite, wonderful pasta cook and believer in 'eating the same food I nag my kids to eat' - Marny has the uncanny ability to take an experience in her life and make it real for her listeners. A good example is the song 'Misbehaving', based on how she felt one weekend when she had an opportunity to set responsibility aside, let loose and play while her kids were away. Marny's debut CD, Reason for Bein', was produced by Bart McKay, one of Canada's top country music producers, whose credits include Brad Johner, Melanie Laine and Gord Bamford. Marny 'had the time of her life' working on the album and was honoured and pumped to work with Bart to put it together. If you get a chance to see or hear Marny Duncan-Cary, do so. And when you buy her CD, do not be surprised when you put it on repeat. Marny performs across Western Canada, and even performed for Queen Elizabeth in 2005. COUNTRY MUSIC NEWS RELEASE REVIEW 'On the liner notes of her debut album, Marny Duncan-Cary tells us she "sold her Harley to make this album". Some would consider the sale a sacrilege; in the case of this Lumsden, Saskatchewan singer/songwriter it appears to have been a very wise investment. The 'ex-biker' can sing (with a JoDee Messina edge to her vocals), she writes a good song (all but two songs have her penwork involved), and she delivers a very tasty record (strong acoustic arrangements produced by award-winning Bart McKay). Radio listeners will already be familiar with Marny Duncan-Cary on the strength of her debut single release Because I Want To, which is currently attracting decent airplay. Several more tunes here have strong potential, especially the heartache tune, Headin' Straight For You which features a soulful vocal by Duncan-Cary. Also strong is the melancholy Linger, and the energy-filled Might Be Misbehaving. One of the songs that Marny Duncan-Cary did not have a hand in writing is He Ain't Missin' Missin' Me, a gender switch on a song penned by Jason McCoy and included on his current album. If McCoy doesn't release the cut as a radio single, Duncan-Cary should definitely jump on another of the 'sure-things' from her package. The album includes an un-listed "Bonus Track" in Rock Star, a fun little item (not for radio), that every busy young mother will relate to. Reason For Bein' was produced by Bart McKay and recorded at his Sound Edge Studios in Saskatoon, with session players like Jeff Bradshaw (steel / dobro), Tyler Vollrath and Jason Heistad (fiddle), Randall Prescott (harmonica), Anthony Kelly and Rich McFarlane (guitars), etc. Contributing their talents.'
