Product Notes

Born and raised in Southern California, Mary Ann Douglas is a product of West Coast Jazz influence. She composes the music and writes the lyrics for all her songs. Trained as a vocalist in the beginning, she didn't return to music until after finishing graduate school, getting married, and beginning a family. In 1997, she produced her first vocal jazz CD, "True Stories". This was followed by "Sensory" in 1999, "Does Thinking Just Make It That Way?" in 2001, and "Unfinished Business" in 2007. On all her recordings she has been surrounded by the talents of great local Southern California musicians including Mundell Lowe, Mike Wofford, Peter Sprague, John Rekevics, Bob Magnusson, Jim Plank, Rephael Harp, Kevin Esposito, Gary Pack, Dan Papaila, and Dave Hoffman. Her CDs have received good critical reviews and airplay both in the United States and France. Music lovers who like original material with introspective, real-life lyrics set to a variety of blues, bossa nova, pop, and smooth jazz stylings will want to acquire the entire collection. Not much performing for this lady - she does what she wants to do - writes and produces. You may catch her at the microphone occasionally in the San Diego area where she lives. REVIEWS: 'Mary Ann Douglas writes all her own material and on (this CD) she comes up with a set of intelligent 'relationship' songs arranged by Mundell Lowe. This set goes in a lot of different directions . . . a formidable mix. Douglas' singing is sly and quietly sexy. This one is an insinuating pleasure.' Jerome Wilson - Cadence 'Mary Ann Douglas writes her own songs. Always philosophical and directly related to everyday living experiences, her timeless stories just make you feel better. Recommended. Jim Santella - L.A. Jazz Scene 'Douglas delivers her material in a light, sparkling, yet warm voice combining the best of Mildred Bailey, Blossom Dearie, and Mabel Mercer. Her writing continues to explore the various phases of love, life, and assorted emotions associated therewith, with a bit of Dave Frishberg tongue in cheek added. Douglas' songs . . . provide for a delightful listening sensation. Recommended. Dave Nathan - All Music Guide 'Mary Ann Douglas . . . is a great lyricist and composer. Other vocalists should pick up her creative original material for their repertory. I hope Japanese jazz/vocal fans will be able to have an opportunity to catch her live some time soon. This one is highly recommended.' Toshiya Taenaka - Jazz Critique, Japan ''Quiet Night' expertly examines the middling comfort that darkness offers the lonely and downhearted, and 'Everything Looks Better after Rain' offers a neat, new twist on the sentiments expressed in 'Give Me the Simple Life'.' Christopher Loudon - JazzTimes.com.
