From Broken Me to Beautiful You
If you ask Matt Neely what kind of music he plays, you'll probably get this response: 'It's guitar driven, alternative-folk-rock-pop-type music.' As clear as mud, right?! But if you want to know what the music is about, he's much clearer . . . 'God.' All you have to do is tune into the lyrics or listen to his biblical teaching and stories to know that Matt Neely has a passion for communicating the gospel with youth and families around this country. In fact, it is the stated goal of the ministry he started in 1997, StorySong Ministries. StorySong Ministries exists to mobilize an entire generation of churched and unchurched youth and families with the radical gospel of Jesus Christ through biblical teaching, storytelling and song. If he had a resume, it would show that Matt has shared the gospel with more than 50,000 people across the country sharing the stage with worship leaders like Chris Tomlin and disciplers and evangelists like Dawson McCallister and Tony Campolo along the way. Matt has recorded with world-class musicians who record regularly with such artists as Sixpence None the Richer, DC Talk, Billy Joel, Michael W. Smith, Amy Grant, and others. Matt has even led workshops around the country about understanding true worship and telling your story as a Christian. But Matt is pretty clear that nothing on that resume makes a lick of difference to God. Matt knows that what God desires is for him to be faithful, not famous. So Matt travels around the country, sharing the gospel in any way that he can. This 34-year old barefooted singer/speaker brings his passion, energy and creativity to every speaking engagement, worship event or concert as he tries to make God famous! 'I am quite sure that God doesn't need me to spread his Word so I'm blessed every time he chooses to work either through me or in spite of me,' says Matt. 'I am not a saint or a perfect example of how to follow Christ. I'm just a guy with a guitar who is blown away by the fact that God hasn't given up on me yet. Jesus has died for me so I am determined to live for Him and sing His song until He comes for me.' Because Matt understands God's limitless love and the huge debt we all owe to Christ, he is not afraid to either comfort or confront in a ministry setting. As Matt says 'My goal is to challenge people to chase God in a radical, reckless way. He deserves everything we have, but only asks for everything we are.' Matt takes this task so seriously that he even removes his shoes to remind him of the Holy ground on which he stands. So invite Matt to be a part of your next ministry event, whether it's a Disciple NOW weekend, a worship event, a youth rally, a summer camp, or whatever. Just know that he'll probably show up barefooted.
