Product Notes

This is a compilation album is comprised of material that was recorded for previous albums, but which didn't make it on that album because it just didn't fit in the flow of the album or because we didn't have the space. This album covers that last 6 six years of Mike's playing and is representative of his styles during this period. There are also a few cuts with the trios he has used and the following musicians appear on this recording: The Chefs: Mike Markaverich - A native of Nashua, New Hampshire, Mike Markaverich was a premature baby whose experience in the incubator resulted in his blindness. Mike began playing a toy piano at age three and took lessons at Perkins School for the Blind where he attended grammar school. He graduated second in his class from Bishop Guertin High School and studied at Dartmouth College where he became interested in jazz and decided to make music his career. After attaining a graduate degree at the University of New Hampshire, Mike began his professional career on Cape Cod where he worked as a solo performer and in various combo settings in major area nightspots for over ten years. In November 1988 he moved to Sarasota where he has been a regular member of the local jazz scene. Mike has also appeared in concert in various venues, appeared on television and radio, given workshops in schools and colleges, teaches jazz piano, and has produced eight of his own recordings. Gary Deary - Born in Detroit, MI, bassist Gary Deary started playing trumpet at age 6 and turned professional at 13 spending many hours in the Motown recording studios. It was during his stint in the Air Force that he picked up the bass, and while in the Reserves he toured overseas with USO bands. After leaving the service, Gary worked the Las Vegas/Reno/Tahoe circuit for a number of years before moving to Sarasota, FL in 1990 where he currently resides, working with his wife, vocalist Debbie Keeton. Tony Martin - As part of a musical family, Tony Martin started playing drums at age 5 and worked in a band with his mom and dad. He grew up near Dayton, OH, moving there at a young age from Livingston, TX. He worked on the riverboat The Delta Queen out of New Orleans from 1977-1995. Relatively self-taught, Tony considers his main influences to be Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, and Louis Bellson. He has lived and worked in the Sarasota/Tampa Bay, FL area since 1995. Johnny Moore - on drums, had the good fortune to have been born into a musical family where he obtained most of his early music educations from his father. He has been a full-time professional musician since 1970, working for 14 years in his native Kansas with such jazz luminaries as Jay McShane, Clark Terry, Herb Ellis and Bob Brookmeyer. He has toured nationally with the Gaslight Gang and been in the back-up band for the Four Freshman. Johnny is a resident of Siesta Key, moving to Florida in 1984. He continues to work at numerous locales along the West Coast of Florida. Bill Pillucere - Born in Huntington, NY, Bill Pillucere has lived in St. Petersburg, FL since 1962. Although primarily self-taught, he has studied with Dee Moses, principal bassist with the Florida orchestra and has studied jazz at the University of South Florida. Bill has performed with Kenny Drew, Jr., Manfredo Fest, Max Farlow, and is one of the most sought after bassists in the Tampa Bay area. He also plays cello and guitar and tunes pianos as a second career. The Master Chef - Mike Badalamenti - Sound Engineer A native of upstate New York, Mike earned a degree in Electrical Engineering from SUNY-Binghamton and originally interned at a recording studio in Miami, FL. He has operated his own studio for the past 16 years recording all different genres of music and sound for commercials, voice-overs, computer video games, talking books, and television programs. He has worked with such luminaries as Michael Jordan, Art Ferrante, Dick Vitale, Jack Perkins, and Stephen King. Mike, an avid dirt bike racer, makes his home in Bradenton, FL. This project would not have been possible without his efforts. Mike was able to locate all the tunes we needed which dated back six years for this compilation. Through the magic of his extensive (and expensive) equipment and the depth of his knowledge of recording engineering techniques, he was then able to make everything sound as if it had been newly recorded. We are in awe of his prodigious talents and very appreciative of his integrity and dedication to his craft. Bless you, Mike, for all your assistance over the past 10 years in bringing out the best of our recordings. It continues to be a joy to work with you.
