Product Notes

'This record was a long time in the making, 48 years to be exact (my age at the time of the recording session). The idea was to produce something 'outside the box,' or, as pianist John Esposito would put it, present music reflecting my own 'point of view.' To this end, all the compositions on this album are original ones of mine. Some of them are deliberately structured in a more open manner than what one usually encounters. I'm most fortunate to have been able to call upon the assistance of three world class musicians in this endeavor. In addition to John Esposito, bassist Ira Coleman and drummer Peter O'Brien appear on this recording. More good fortune was having the opportunity to utilize the skills of one of the best recording engineers and producers in the business, Scott Petito, who happens to be a great musician in his own right. Peter O'Brien's career has spanned multiple musical genres. Examples of artists he's been associated with are Jeff Marx, Jack McDuff, Edgar Winter, Johnny Winter, Junior Wells, Buddy Guy and Roy Buchanan. He's a member of the John Esposito Trio and Quintet and has also been a member of the famed rock band Orleans. Peter has appeared on television commercial soundtracks as well, being partly responsible for steering people to Burger King. Peter lives with his family in Saugerties, New York. Ira Coleman has been touring with vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater for several years. He's also been associated with such musical luminaries as Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams, Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, Archie Shepp, Betty Carter, and Jackie McLean. Ira is a member of the John Esposito Trio, has been involved in various World Music projects, and has performed with noted soprano Jessye Norman. Born in Stockholm, Sweden, raised in France and Germany, and married to a Danish woman, Ira makes his home in Rhinebeck, New York, where he speaks primarily English. John Esposito has performed and/or recorded with numerous Jazz luminaries, among them Arthur Rhames, Jeff Marx, Eric Person, Nick Brignola, J.R. Montrose, Pharoah Sanders, Sam Rivers, Joe Lovano, Dave Douglas, Dave Holland, Rashied Ali, and Franklin Kiermyer. A long-time member of the faculty of the Bard College Music Department, John makes his home in Germantown, New York. Special thanks are in order for John, with whom I've spent a great deal of time honing my craft as both a player and writer. My association with him is among my most cherished, both musically and otherwise. I myself am a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, where I earned a bachelor's degree in Jazz Studies and a master's degree in Composition. There, I got to study saxophone with the legendary instructor Joe Allard, whose students included, among other saxophone giants, Eric Dolphy, Michael Brecker, and Dave Liebman. I also came into contact with talented artists such as the late Jaki Byard, with whom I had the privilege of performing on several occasions.' -Mitch Kessler.
