Play with Me
Mr KING A singer's 6-octave range combined with international flair and deep southern roots, BSS Musik recording artist Mr KING combines eclectic music styles from across the globe with raw, honest lyrics to create a 'Rock 'N Soul' sensation like none other... Passionate... Real... Edgy... A History of the King-dom After opening for bands such as Hootie and the Blowfish, Edwin McCain, UB40 and Kansas, lead singer Ivan King moved out to LA to further pursue his musical creations and teamed up with guitarist Peter Houston, bassist/Pianist Damian Heredia, guitarist Todd Shiroma and drummer Fred Caguiat 6 months within his arrival on the music scene; a month after they were formed, Mr King was in demand in venues across Southern California. Less than a year later, they had a BSS contract in hand and a full CD in the final stages of production. Coming alive on stage, their shows are most often compared to Matchbox 20 and their writing style to the Black Crowes. On their last 3 live tours, the band played two hours straight to a growing audience. Best summed up in their 2003 track titled 'The Road is My Home,' the audience drives Mr King; whether they are playing in the Carribean, South America, Central America, in Europe or any of the 50 states, as long as they have an audience they come alive with a fascinating energy and wealth of musicianship... Raised on his mother's gospel music, lead singer Ivan King was first introduced to rock and roll when stranded in a Swedish train station 4 hours from the North Pole in the dead of winter. He had a walkman and found an old Tina Turner tape lying on the ground. Tina 'got him through the night' and introduced him to his life-long career of music. Combining music into community into love into life into... Ivan and the band work to create songs that are driving, insightful and varied in style. Their most recent CD, Play With Me, due in stores early 2004, presents songs about life, goodbyes, and making it in the 'real world.' The first single, also titled Play With Me, describes learning to work in the business world while keeping humanity in your life; watching yourself become someone else during the day so you can survive in your creative life at night... Thank you, a song of friendship and good-byes, will be heard in several media venues throughout 2004... The Road is my Home describes why when you are musician you are a musician- it may mean sacrificing and living on the road, living in cramped apartments and cheap hotels... But when you are an artist you are an artist, and you know there's nothing else you can do; and the goal in life is to find that one thing you love, like being a musician, you have no choice to follow that thread no matter what sacrifices that passion may impose. Once you find that passion, despite circumstances, you find that higher level of contentment. Beyond playing their regular gigs and spending time in the studio, Mr KING can often be seen participating in fundraisers for local community groups or playing different musical genres to children to promote understanding. And they can always be seen thrusting all of their energies and spirit into performing unique melodies, harmonies, vocals and with a hard-edged soul. People and Personalities: ? Lead singer Ivan King is a former Nickelodeon child actor, has a photographic memory and was told 'never to sing vibrato' by his first vocal coach. The next day, he quit taking lessons, went on an audition singing the vibrato he loved, and was cast on Nickelodeon. ? When first learning of his talents, Ivan would do renditions of Happy Birthday at the restaurants at which he waited tables, through which he made more money than his tips and paycheck combined. ? Between the band members, they have played in the Caribbean, South America, Central America, Europe and the fifty United States as well as many a cruise-ships (consequently, most of them can throw a little Broadway Dancing your way if so desired...). ? Peter Houston not only knows how to play, but he knows how to listen: with perfect pitch, he can play nearly any rock song he hears-after hearing it just one time. ? Drummer Fred Caguait, beyond his extreme talent is the driving force of the band with his rhythms, enthusiasm and disciplined. ? Guitarist/pianist Damian Heredia is not only getting his master's in music after years of teaching, but plans to continue teaching public school students throughout his musical career. ? Bassist Todd Shiroma is a die-hard historian and collector of artifacts- one can definitely tell when his historical insights seep through to complement the emotive lyrics on many of Mr. King's creations.
