For this first, Argentina-shot screen take on Richard Wright's explosive 1940 novel, the author himself portrayed Bigger Thomas, a struggling young African-American in Depression-era Chicago who lands a chauffeur's job with an affluent family. The patronizing overtures of the household's left-leaning daughter (Jean Wallace), however, set the stage for ultimate tragedy.
