Orchard Hill Christmas
Pittsburgh Post gazette gives it 4 stars! Rock on, Orchard Hill Church, rock on! Your Christmas at Orchard Hill sets the gold standard for church service productions. Excellent! --Carol Swanson Christmasreviews.com (Reviewed in 2007) This is the 3rd and newest release, recorded live at Orchard Hill Church. It's an exciting and dynamic set of Christmas Music, both traditional and non-traditional. This is not your typical or expected church music or band. There is some exceptional music and playing on this disc. It begins out of the ordinary, with a kicking instrumental version of Winter Wonderland, featuring Curtis Johnson. Long time professor of Jazz studies, and well known Pittsburgh sideman, Johnson, who's played with a veritable who's who in the music world, tears up this funky version of the tune. Light of the Stable follows, featuring well known worship leader, David DeMarco, and the powerful vocal of the New York Voices Kim Nazarian. It ends with a Stomp-esque percussion explosion. You can just feel the electricity in the room as this song builds. Children Go Where I Send Thee is a surprising and funky twist on the old childrens' song. Complete with Earth Wind and Fire style horn section, you'll be sure to tap your foot along with this one! Throughout the rest of the CD you'll be surprised as Orchard Hill unfolds a plethora of styles and songs, from the straight ahead jazz trio of Rick Gallagher's Little Drummer Boy, to the rockin blues of Joe Feick's thick vocal on Go Tell It On The Mountain, to the quirky and fun Baby King. And you'll be touched by the Sweet vocals of Maureen Budway on the beautiful Welcome to Our World, Lori Thee's tender and beautiful vocal on Breath Of Heaven, or the lively and dynamic vocal of Christina Acosta on one of the several obscure Christmas songs, O Messiah. Whether you like jazz or rock, traditional or contemporary, you'll be sure to love this CD and keep it as one of your holiday favorites year after year.
